10. Chayce McDermott, SP

Drafted: 4th Round, 2021 from Ball State (HOU)
Age 23.9 Height 6′ 3″ Weight 197 Bat / Thr L / R FV 40
Tool Grades (Present/Future)
Fastball Slider Curveball Changeup Command Sits/Tops
55/60 50/55 50/55 30/40 30/45 92-95 / 98

McDermott, whose brother is a pro basketball player, had a relief look at Ball State, albeit an exciting, potentially high-leverage one if he were to experience a velocity spike in pro ball. His arm action is long but loose, he gets down the mound well, his fastball has carry, and his curveball has depth and bite. So far in pro ball, developed as a piggyback starter the way Houston tends to, McDermott has not only held serve as a starting pitching prospect but increased his chances of staying there, largely because he has better-than-anticipated command of his two breaking balls. He’s throwing his curveball a little bit harder than when he was at Ball State (from 74-75 mph on average to 77). While his changeup is a distant fourth offering, McDermott’s two breaking balls have enough demarcation to present different looks to hitters, and they play very well with his riding fastball. While his fastball command and pitch efficiency are still in a fringe area for a starter, he’s made enough progress to start projecting him as one.

So 2 guys who are 23 and only at high A, and one is set to have TJ surgery.

I didn't expect much for Mancini on his own, and figured he'd be packaged with a reliever, but this is a pretty underwhelming return.

I feel like age matters less when it comes to pitchers.  If either of them comes up and is a 26-27 year old rookie, that makes him Tyler Wells.  Not so bad....

6. Seth Johnson, SP

Drafted: 1st Round, 2019 from Campbell (TBR)
Age 23.5 Height 6′ 0″ Weight 200 Bat / Thr R / R FV 50
Tool Grades (Present/Future)
Fastball Slider Curveball Changeup Command Sits/Tops
55/60 50/60 45/50 40/45 30/50 92-97 / 99

Johnson didn’t have great college numbers at Campbell in 2019, but he intrigued scouts and analysts alike as an athletic former middle infielder who was new to the mound and already showing some intriguing pitch data. Few teams in baseball do a better job of turning pitching projections into reality than the Rays, who selected Johnson with the 40th overall pick and then watched him put up a strikeout rate of nearly 30% in his 2021 full-season debut. Johnson’s stuff has taken a step forward since turning pro, and he now sits 95-97 mph with a fastball that while impressive on the radar gun, doesn’t feature much in the way of life. He gets impressive spin on a pair of power breakers, but the upper-70s curveball features far more movement than the mid-80s slider. His changeup is still rare, but has improved to average since signing. Johnson tends to throw strikes, but doesn’t locate within the zone as well as one would like. Still, this is an athletic, well-coordinated raw pitcher with considerable big league potential in a role that remains very much to be determined.

Diaz has his chance now. Hope he stays healthy and sticks. And Stowers is next up.

This feels like "here's your shot before we likely DFA you this off-season in the ensuring 40-man crunch".

With Hyde always saying they're right-hand heavy, it's pretty weird that Stowers didn't get the call.

    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles

    • Elias is refusing to spend money that Rubenstein has made available.  Do you have any sources?
    • Outside Hamilton, I can't really think of any areas or invidivuals outside the line that have really stepped up.  Humphrey and Stephens have played okay but it certainly hasn't offset the complete zeroes that Eddie Jackson and Marcus Williams have been.  I don't think you want to pull Hamilton off SS even though he can handle deep zone assignments fine, because he's essentially a linebacker that can cover wide receivers and there's too much value in that in the box.  And I think that Roquan/Simpson look lost in pass coverage because the safeties behind them are playing like butt.  Besides Roquan wasn't ever really a great coverage safety, he was kind of okay at it but he was never like a Lavonte David or Fred Warner there.   I'm starting to wonder if we need to either trade for a FS and/or start giving Ardarius Washington more snaps.  He certainly doesn't look worse than Jackson/Williams at this point in his limited playing time.  In general i think safety is an undervalued position so we're likely to get good value in trade.
