Playing your worst hitters just because the other team is throwing a left hander sounds like a bad idea.

Mullins has OPSs .815 vs RH, .554 vs LH this year.
McKenna has OPSed .550 vs RH, .855 vs LH this year.

In addition, Hill gives up a 90 point higher OPS to RH than to LH this year, 50 points over his career.

Do you really think that McKenna is the worse hitter than Mullins vs this pitcher today?   If so, then why has he spent an entire season with a pathetics .554 OPS vs LH.   What makes today different from the rest of the season, when McKenna has been clearly a better hitter vs Mullins vs lefthanded pitching, by a HUGE margin?

Another announcer favorite recently in addition to the "______ has it all working today" to rationalize a bad pitcher dominating, is "Well this pitcher has been really hot lately, and even though the overall numbers dont look great, the last few starts he's really been figuring it out"

Rich Hill Last 7 starts:

W  L  ERA  IP    H  R  BB  K   WHIP

2    2    5.52       31.0   35   19    9   26      1.42

O's making him look like Koufax.

Substituting McKenna for Mullins make sense, although you would think your 4th OF would know how to bunt.  The rest of the lineup decisions are questionable at best.  A good part of the reason why the O's can't win a Sunday game.  Hard to make the playoffs when you punt 1 game a week.

Yeah, but it's nullified when you're trotting Hays and Aguilar out there.  I mean if your OPS is pathetic I don't care if the pitcher out there is a righty or a lefty.

McKenna batting lead off is nonsense.  And if Hyde chooses to channel Showalter and say “who else?”  The answer would be   Cedric, Henderson, Vavra, Stowers, Adley.   Off day tmw, “traveling” to DC on Tuesday.   Seems like Hyde is no longer playing for post-season slot.

Everyone you name either bats left or is a switch hitter who is weaker vs lefties.   It's like you don't even want to consider who the opponent's starting pitcher is when making out the lineup.     Maybe Hyde actually does look at the opponent's starter when making a lineup.   Or maybe you are right, maybe he is "no longer playing for a post-season slot".   Hmm, which explanation makes more sense.

I wouidn't have bunted with McKenna, he's hit lefties well this year, I would have let him swing away.

Glad Hill is gone, let's see if we can make some noise against this defense.

McKenna CF

Adley DH

Santander RF

Urias 2B'

Mountcastle 1B

Gunnar 3B

Hays LF

Chirinos C

Mateo SS

This is a reasonable Sunday lineup and still gives Mullins and Adley (DH) rest.

Stowers might have been the best bet since he's hit lefties well in the minors and he'll take pitches.
