Guys getting signed will convince me.

Yes …. But I think we can agree that when he’s said stuff so far it’s been spot on. The middle of the league payroll was 137 million. That number differs from the average being $115 million.

With the increase in revenue from the tv deal and the $30 million Disney windfall those numbers should rise 10-20 percent.

I’m betting he has a budget somewhere around the league average. Will he spend all that? The trade additions will almost certainly increase the payroll.

I think we will be surprised once the chips start falling. I’d make extending Adley now while he’d be motivated to do it.He made $700,00 this year and isn’t a free agent until 2029.

How about a 10 year deal beginning in 2023?  at say 10 years $163 million.?

1- 5 million

2 - 7.5 million

3- 10 million

4- 12.5 million

5- 15.5 million

6- 17.5 million

7- 20 million

8 - 22.5 million

9- $25 million

10- 25 million

Certainly you can adjust the early years to make it more attractive if needed. Say pull $5 million off of each of the last three years and make it a bonus paid now.

Orioles Checking In On Free Agent Shortstops

By Darragh McDonald | December 2, 2022 at 9:52am CDT

This offseason features a group of shortstops often referred to as the “Big Four,” which consists of Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts an Dansby Swanson. While they have been connected in rumors to most of the high-spending clubs around the league, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports that the Orioles have checked in on them. Heyman adds that it’s more likely they invest in starting pitching since their need at shortstop isn’t terribly strong and there are other teams involved, but the interest is noteworthy nonetheless.

"Welcome to Birdland, Kyle Gibson!"

I kid, I kid...

...I hope 😐

I’d probably rather have Gibson than Lyles.  He’s qualified for the ERA title five years in a row.  But, no that’s not who I’d want as our winter headliner.

SP Michael Wacha- $14 million

OF Mitch Haniger- $12 million

C Jorge Alfaro- $3 million

Generic RP- $6 million

There, I have significantly raised payroll.

If you are shopping in the dumpster (Haniger) you might as well go internal. I don’t hate Wacha as the second guy ….if he’s the main I believe we’d be better off bringing Lyles back. That catcher is fine but I prefer Casali. Why waste $6 million on a generic RP as Elias is good at identifying gems.

Your proposal is a half hearted measure and significantly wastes payroll. If that is their best effort we should sell off Santander, Mullins, Urias, Mateo etc.

I don’t think Elias will waste money on half measures. The moves you are suggesting will just be adding to the problem. Poor OBP, Replace 180 IP guy & With a 130 iP guy, and 2 pieces of scrap.

I keep saying Elias is in on Correa

Dumb wording ….Elias knows the cost. I’m sure he’s not dumb enough to think he’s going to get a bargain.

Just a BS rumor more than likely.

It comes from a throwaway line in a Jon Heyman article:  “The Orioles are checking on top shortstops, but with the need less than overwhelming, and bigger market teams involved, it’s more likely they sign starting pitchers.” https://nypost.com/2022/12/01/astros-has-some-justin-verlander-hesitation-in-mlb-free-agency/

Hardly worth getting excited about.

What exactly is “checking in”?

From the O's perspective, it's due diligence. Possible it could turn into something, but due diligence nonetheless.

From the Agent's perspective it another "competitor" to point to in negotiations.

From Heyman's perspective it's clickbait.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
