International Signing Period starts Sunday Jan 15th - O's to make biggest signing in their history

So four more players than last year. Top player Almeyda ranked slightly higher and cost a bit more than Tayvera last year. Second player Liranzo appears slightly cheaper and outside the top 50 vs last year's Arias. Overall looks like maybe an incremental step forward (but not a radical shift) in terms of spending and quality of prospects?

I wonder when they commit the bonus amounts to these guys.  Let's say the Orioles started recruiting Almeyda at 13-14. Is the 2.3M agreed to at that time?   If so, do the Orioles pretty much know how their pool money is being spent 2 years in advance of that class? How many players are like that verses players who popped up on the radar within the last 6-12 months and signed in this class?  I would think anyone 18 or older falls into this category.   Good questions for Coby,  I think.

Maybe, or they see value in loading up on the 100K types.  It could be a strategy.   They have not done well in the 400K area previously with Ortiz and Gonzale in 2019, Feiciano in 2020, and Sosa last year.   Last year we had Amparo and Arias over 600K but you could argue that we had a bunch of comparable guys under 200k with Estrada, Bevavides, and Velazquez. It's hard to say how much is strategy and how much is getting shut out on mid range bonus players.

I agree with you.  Ask me in five years how it worked out.

Big dude for 16.  Looks like a body you can project.  Pretty slick hands.  Exciting signing.

Nearly lost his balance on a couple of those routine throws. Hope he didn't hurt himself there. Is it my imagination or did he completely miss that second pitch?

Pretty big signing bonus compared to some of the other guys ranked around him.

I wonder if that’s an indication that they rank him too low, if the Os have to pay more to get guys because of the lack of past relationships or if he was highly sought after and they just had to go higher to get him..or if it’s a combo of some or all of that?

Either way, great to see it get done.  Let’s hope this one works out.

Door #3 - Elias saw metrics he liked and wanted to make an aggressive offer Almeyda couldn’t refuse (and no other team would touch).  Along the lines of the Lyles and Gibson signings.

Keeler Morfe is a very strong name.     I did spot check Keeler on B-Ref and it is just Wee Willie, and then another dozen plus minor leaguers and others in history.

It'd be cool if he grew to near Randy Johnson heights and in keeping with the baseball of today, didn't let them hit it where they ain't, or where they are, or even foul it into the stands.

His NJ/US origin likely led to the highest bidder type of situation (not a 12 YO from the DR). The Orioles available spending resources (do I dare say this) are why they picked him.

Looking forward to the O’s year 1-current year international message board postings, rather than posit over their new and green market!
