Perfect example of a thread I have seen…basically stating that Elias is a racist because he’s a Trump guy and that is why Jones has been frozen out and is estranged from the team.

This spins both ways and even on here  Politics became an either you or with my side or you are evil . I don't really care who he voted for .He is a baseball GM not running for public office.

Probably because the person starting the thread has had deep personal conversations with Elias about his political views and racial attitudes.   Or, he’s some guy judging people by taking the worst interpretation possible of third hand information he got off the internet. One or the other.

Slight lean the latter vs the former for me.

Honestly, it’s ridiculous.

People are now at the point where they bashing Elias and looking for any reason to attack him because of his political affiliation.

Why are we even talking about it?  What difference does it make?

Gotta love the "Why are we even talking about it?" and then 5 minutes later continuing to talk about it. :)

Yep.. only one person seems to keep bringing it up and trying to drive attention towards it. Wonder why that is. Also, twitter comments are outrageous, says the guy who cites ridiculous theories he read in the Twitter comments.

Here's a hypothetical for you.   You're the assistant GM.   You know your team is cheating with the video/garbage lid system.   You don't think it's right.   The players and manager are ok with it and the GM is ok with it.   Do you keep your mouth shut or be the guy who turns your own team in?

We're looking for honesty here!

I'd keep my head down and have my resume ready for a job elsewhere. Perhaps in Baltimore, Maryland.

I just got through the part of the book where as defending champs in the 2018 postseason HOU believed CLE was doing something shady (sourced in part by team member and longtime AL Central member Justin Verlander's belief), and Mike Elias was named as one of the HOU employees who did some "counterintelligence" looking for a string tied to an outfield tree by the groundskeeper or some such.

I assume this is approximately around the same time he was also interviewing and being selected for the Baltimore position.

A lot of the honest intellectual conflict between Mike Fast (now with Atlanta) and Sig was totally new to me - basically around how fast to incorporate emerging data streams into models.

I find this more interesting than the rest of the topics in this thread!  A bot dual!  That type of input will materially impact the output and will fall somewhere on the "potentially-to-certainly" continuum of decision making.

You're a little ahead of me, but the parts about Fast and Sig are really interesting, plus all the Taubman stuff.

Drellich kind of does a shoulder shrug and infers "it was going to happen anyway" in regards to electronic sign stealing when he talks about how the Mariners were stealing signs via video.  The Astros hired a scout away from the Mariners in 2014 IIRC and that scout told Dave Trembley that he needed to switch up his signals, that the Mariners had them deciphered the previous year when the Astros were in town.  That, and the proliferation of video cameras being installed in major league stadiums so MLB could introduce league-wide replay in games makes it sound like it was all headed this way no matter what.

I have brought it up before. I vividly remember Wieters giving out a separate set of signs with nobody on base in Toronto.

This stuff has been going on forever.

Did Fast want to go slow?  😉

It’s hilarious to me that people think:

1. This is new

2. All teams were not doing this

Nope, the names in that part of the drama fit.    S was for Sig and for slower, and Fast preferred fast.

Of course that was within the context of the Astros innovating culture.     Some of how the book framed the appeal of BAL for Sig was the opportunity to reiterate some of the beginning stuff.     I'm sure the frontier has kept moving the last half decade.     Clearly 2023's cutting edge wisdom involves ongoing constraint (ahem, wise and judicious usage) in the deployment of your best players!

I haven't quite finished cover to cover but have read all the Elias index pages and haven't encountered anything on fidelity yet, so unless an insinuation is hidden on an un-indexed page, I'm going to go with all those bits are Twitter-sphere rumors, not anything Drellich wrote.
