Coby Mayo 2023

I hope a hot enough stretch between now and Labor Day rates OMAR analyzing him as a September lineup possibility.

Presently on the MLB roster, O'Hearn, Hicks, Lester and McKenna are guys who perhaps don't project competitive at the game's highest intensity.     Probably not Mayo either this fall, but I'd feel more of a puncher's chance with him if he can give 3 more months of evidence he is one of the world's most promising power hitting prospects.

In addition to pitcher rest and wildcard HFA, a stress free cup of coffee environment is some of what continuing to bank a lot of wins could gain for the ballclub.

There is a 0% chance Mayo is a September callup.  I'd say slim chance he breaks camp with the team next season as well.

I was at the game tonight and not only did he hit that mammoth blast, he made several nice defensive plays including one come in wit a strong off balance throw to first to get the runner.

That's great to hear.  It seemed a lot of scouting reports suggested he didn't have the mobility or athleticism to stick at 3B.  Do you think he can stick at 3B?

I doubt there is a reason to have him play 3rd here.  If he is playing 3rd in Baltimore something went wrong with Henderson and Holliday.

Let's just say I think he has a lot of the tools to play there now, but needs more consistency (too many errors) and I think he's ultimately going to outgrow the position.

Remember, he's 6-5, 230 pounds at 21 years old. He's going to be a beast when he fills out.

Maybe so, but you keep him at the more valuable position until he shows he can't handle it.  You never know what our roster will look like in a couple years, and he also has more trade value as a 3B than 1B or corner OF.

Any chance of him playing RF? We hear multiple times of his strong arm. How would his athleticism play out there.

He runs well enough now I believe, but will he when he fills out? Personally I'd give him some looks there but he might be a natural fit for 1B when the system doesn't really have one.

Gotta love the on base streak. Would be a shame to lose one of his biggest assets (his cannon for an arm) with a move to 1B.  If he doesn’t stick a 3B, I’m hoping for RF.

My unprofessional scouting opinion is that I think he can stick at 3rd.  He’s athletic enough.  Just needs to continue to improve his footwork and timing so that the actions required at 3rd become more instinctual for him.  When he has to think about things, that’s when he seems to get into trouble at the hot corner.

If Devers can stick at third then Mayo can.  But honestly I would put Devers at first first chance I got if I was Boston.
