14. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 11-7

Previous ranking: 17

Adley Rutschman might get the most attention on the Orioles, but he isn't the team's leader in WAR. That title goes to shortstop Jorge Mateo, who's off to a hot start hitting .362/.418/.638 with three homers and eight stolen bases. Mateo ranks fourth in position player bWAR. After sweeping Oakland, Baltimore took two of three against the White Sox, keeping pace with the rest of the division. -- Lee

Fangraphs playoff odds has us at 22%, up from 9% at the beginning of the season. We've jumped ahead of the Red Sox and White Sox into a virtual tie with the 8-11 Mariners.

I'm confident we're better than both colors of Sox.    The AL might play out kind of simple.

Are there any chinks in the armor of the Top 5 - HOU, TB, NYY, TOR, Central champ

Bottom 5 is OAK, DET, KC, CHW, BOS

Adley vs. Julio vs. Shohei vs. deGrom vs. MIN-CLE loser for one spot.

How soon can we trade for Hendriks or Sale or, best of all, Shohei?     My memory is both Manny and the Cubs expensive Jose Quintana cross-town acquisition were the All-Star break.     Elias with the #1 farm has the most talent to bid.     Almost all of the 10 best Orioles are at last in BAL.

Up to 32%, now ahead of the Mariners, just behind the Angels. We're rooting against LAA, TEX, and CLE.

deGrom left yesterday’s game in the 4th.  MRI today?  How much of TEX playoff hopes rest on his right arm?

Buying free agent pitching through a long term contract are bad investments.

I think that's right, if you're saying that to acquire very good starting pitching you are very likely to have to pay a lot for some unproductive seasons. But I think it is, or can be, more complicated than that. Suppose you have an over-.500 team, with a mix of veteran and young talent you think you can keep together for the next few years, but your weak spot is starting pitching. You think adding a dominant starter would get you to the post-season, would make you better in short series, and maybe get you a World Series title or two with some luck. You don't have anyone in your system who looks like he'll develop into that pitcher any time soon, and your top prospects won't bring a guy like that back in a trade (even if any are available).

You might reasonably decide that your most likely path to the Wortld Series is to sign a free agent starter. Even though the two guys you want both demand six or season years, and there's no way in hell you think they'll be any good beyond four or five (if that, and if they're not injured), it might make sense to invest in a long-term contract with one of them. It may be a "bad investment" in terms of WAR per dollars spent, but if you think that's the way, and the only way, to get to the World Series, excite your fans, and send them the message that you're series about winning, it might be a really good investment.

MLB.com has the Orioles third this week.

3. Orioles, 22-12 (last week: 5)

While their brethren in the "fun early season stories" department, the Pirates, have fallen on hard times, the Orioles have continued to maintain their status in the powerful AL East after going 3-3 last week despite dropping two of three against the Braves in Atlanta. Next on the schedule? A return to Camden Yards to face the best team in baseball in a big early-season series against the Rays

Not bad considering Hyde is purposely throwing games.

    • This.  Baseball is a game of failure, but my goodness these guys went above and beyond in that department. Productive outs shouldn't be that hard.  Watch Witt in the first inning of Game 2.  And while the two playoff games perfectly told the story of the 2024 Orioles offense, I am hopeful that national stage embarrassment provides a real learning experience and motivation for fixing what is wrong with them.  As much as I am sure it hurts to watch your own hand being broken, Cowser should be watching that AB every single day from now until next October. Same thing with Adley channeling his inner Chris Davis and staring at that 2-0 meatball like he has never seen a major league pitch before.
    • Could fit the profile Elias likes of veteran free agents who might be willing to sign for few years at higher AAV's. I love the splitter. I'd be interested. Free agent means no posting fee, correct? Not that it matters.
    • All the talk about facing LH pitchers and needing RH bats to match up - I think it’s a bit overblown. Our approach was terrible and our guys failed to play team baseball just as much against RHP w/ platoon advantage. Guys just consistently failed to do their job.
    • I agree on both parts here. I’ve been reflecting on my love for baseball. Even the postseason helped me realize I enjoy the slow burn of the regular season.  I also am far away from MD and for me Baltimore is part of my cultural roots (both parents from the area). So in some sort of way, like you said, maybe there’s a healthy separation and more tolerance for failure. Maybe even nostalgia, lol. But I’ll take it.
    • I don’t live in Maryland either, but I still have family that are there and most of them are more into the Ravens, yet they send me O’s stuff all the time — which really isn’t a great pulse for O’s fan expectations. I think from the time I lived there until now (which is a few decades), Baltimore is definitely more of a football town. Maybe my family does reflect the times? As for OH and representation, that’s a fascinating question. To me, the OH feels like the place is generally a group of the hardcore of the hardcore baseball fans, with some part timers mixed in. The differences tend to break on personality types (cynics, optimists, realists — and a handful of comedians). If Elias only tweaks a couple things and doesn’t make any fundamental changes (like maybe drafting more pitchers) or pretending nothing can be done about RISP — then any glow about the rebuild will truly fade, at least in my house.
    • The lack of velocity will be issue I think in majors at his age but the secondary pitches must be very good.  It is interesting that in Japan the splitter is like the cutter/sweeper is in MLB.  It seems Asian league goes more for the up and down movement while MLB pitching strategy is the lateral movement of pitches.
