I think WAR and a buck gets you a cup of senior citizen coffee at Mickey D's.  I think Santander will drive in a 100 this year, and hit 30+ homers, barring injury.  I HOPE there is a better version of Cowser than we've seen so far.

I think it’s pretty likely (70%) that Cowser has a better career than Santander’s.  Maybe not more homers or RBI’s.   Better BA, better OBP, more runs scored, better defense.  But that’s not to diss what Santander has accomplished, or may still accomplish in the future.  He’s a solid player.

We'll see both teams in the next couple weeks, but the Baseball Trade Values podcast folks this week had the take both the Rays and the Dodgers (and their strong farms) have had so many pitching injuries they too will be in the thick of it fighting it out for Giolito, Eduardo and anyone else important.

I think there is a ton of SP’s who will be available with expiring contracts.

The Dodgers win the West, they get a bye. Same with Rays. Would be nice to be greedy and win the division.

I base nothing on AAA numbers, and nothing on WAR.  WAR is a statistical bridge too far for me.  There's too much subjectivity.  I don't think Cowser has the power people think he does.

WAR isn't that subjective

Batting Runs (RBI)- not subjective

Fielding Runs Above Average - You need some way to measure defense

Positional Adjustment - reasonable to me, the ability to play catcher is more valuable than the ability to play first base

League Adjustment - Of course deadball and steroid era stats should not be treated the same

Base Running Runs  - not subjective

Runs Added or Lost Due to Grounding into Double Plays- not subjective

/Runs Per Win.

Had you ever looked into what went into WAR?

Runs and RBI are extremely team dependent.  It's like measuring a pitcher by wins, it's far too elementary to be able to isolate individual performance.  WAR certainly shouldn't be relied upon on its own or really even used as a predictive stat, but as far as an all encompassing stat for player accumulated value in a given year , it's the best we have.

Actually I did.  How those numbers are weighted, particularly fielding numbers, is subjective.  As I understand it, there is more than one WAR.
