Vespi

A friend of mine commented during the game that the Dodgers are a great fastball-hitting team and the O’s needed to bring in someone who was more of a breaking ball guy.  Enter Vespi.

Like a lot of our guys, he can be very effective when he’s locating well, and look like a BP pitcher when he’s not.

He’s earning his 40 man spot for sure. He still has an option for next season as well and is pitching his way off the 40-man bubble.  Stuff+ likes him even with the low velo FB. He now looks like a quality 2nd/3rd LH RP option that has flexibility to ride the Norfolk shuttle, and that’s very valuable depth to have even if he doesn’t become a true late game option.

The interesting decision will be when Perez is ready to be activated - will Vespi have outperformed him enough that they throw in the towel and DFA Perez? I think Perez will get another shot but it could be a short leash.

Yeah, I think you give Perez one more shot. Honestly, a lot of his most recent struggles were weak-hit grounders finding holes. Agree that it shouldn't be a particularly long leash, especially if we trade for bullpen help.

The value of having options. Despite that performance, I could see him going down tonight since we’re playing with a short pen.

They have Irvin, Coulombe, Cano and Bautista for tonight's game.    They should be fine.

I've been a big fan of Vespi since last summer. I hope he gets more opportunities to develop his career as an Oriole. I think he has been contributing nicely to a bullpen that needs reinforcements.

If Frobby's friend is correct, then the Orioles should use Danny Coulombe tonight.

Bummer. At least it was for an established part of the bullpen (especially from last season) and not for some scrub. The long outing last night kind of dictated this was going to happen because Vespi would not have been available to pitch for a few days and the bullpen is already short one pitcher.

This is something the O's do that I really don't like.    They call up guys coming off injury quickly.   I think Perez had one appearance at AA.   Then boom right back to the majors.   As much trouble as Perez has been through this season  I would like to see the rehab go a little longer.

Hyde said it was more of a precautionary IL and not a serious injury. He had a good line in his rehab appearance. I don't think the O's do this routinely, it depends on the player and injury.

    • I’m not against getting Crochet, but I see him as more of a trade that’s looking into 2025 and beyond. Crochet is likely to get rested in the second half or even put on the shelf in September.  If it’s about getting pitchers to help with a deep postseason run then Elias will have to make additional moves.  Crochet is already near double the amount of innings he’s ever pitched over an entire season. I don’t see it likely he pitches 200 innings this season after his injury history.
    • What I have heard about the batter's eye is that it is made of some kind of mesh and at certain time of day, light shines through it.   This was from a Darrell Hernaiz interview a couple of years ago.   Also, the lights aren't that good, per Hernaiz.
    • This is probably a good pivot if nothing else but the "better" pitchers on the market don't pan out. Connor Norby would seem like a player the Cubs would want. If we are willing to take on the salary. Do the Cubs really think they are contending in 2025 or 26? Hell, maybe they can add in Drew Smyly. Especially if DC looks iffy to actually make it back this season.
    • ??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either. It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.  You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...
    • I don't see any issue with an innings limit. Let him pitch the next two months as an opener. Ramp him up again in September. Let him loose in October.
    • Crochet in June. 36 IP, 27 H, 6 BB, 56 K Doesn’t look like he’s getting tired to me.   Innings limit?   Unless Crochet is asking for a limit, I say there is no limit. Did someone put an innings limit on 23 Chris Sale (78 to 180), 39 yo Verlander (0 to 175) or a 23 yo Jim Palmer (0 to 181)?
