Marlins need a SS. If you aren’t going to pay up for Cease or Luzardo, use Mateo or Ortiz as part of the deal to get Cabrera or Garrett.

I actually like the idea of adding Garrett. What beyond Mateo would you need to send to get him. I’m sure they’d prefer Ortiz.

No kidding.  The SS they had last year, Berti, was overall better than Mateo.    They aren’t trading for Mateo as their starting SS.  Try to think like a Marlin fan instead of just getting rid of the guys you want gone.

If you were the Marlins, would you see Mateo or Urias as enough of an upgrade (or an upgrade at all) over Berti to justify parting with a young pitching prospect? I just don't see any realistic scenario where either of those players bring back anything of consequence in a trade. We'd be better off trying to sell them Santander + a prospect (as an upgrade over Sanchez in RF) for Cabrera or Garrett. That would at least align more with their needs.

Well, Joey Wendle was their starting SS most of the year (81 starts), and he’s gone.  Berti is more of a utility guy.  Segura at 3B was awful so they could slide Berti to 3B and play Mateo at SS.  Now, I’m not saying I think Mateo would be the feature piece of any trade, but I could see the Marlins taking him as part of a package.   Ortiz makes more sense, as he’s younger and cheaper.

For a team looking to improve their offense, Mateo is not a move I’m seeing.  As an extra piece, backup player maybe.  Ortiz makes some sense if they believe in his bat.

This is all about Elias. My guess is Cowser or Kjerstad and Ortiz could get you Garrett but will Elias move either of the OFers?

At this point, I’m hoping for Cabrera because I think we can get him for a package that Elias is willing to trade and he represents an upside that no other starter that is realistically available to us has.

Ortiz would be the guy.

If I’m the Marlins, I want Ortiz and Kjerstad in any deal for Luzardo or Garrett.    They’ll ask for Mayo.  Josh Bell is their 1B.  Jesus Sanchez is fine in RF.   Both players help them now and the future.   I doubt they want 1 year of Santander along with his 12M salary.

Then you can throw in Horvath and Luis DeLeon.

Cabrera could be a great addition, as he has prime stuff and may cost the least. He's a risk with his wildness (career 5.9 BB9)... but I believe there is a solid chance our pitching coaches can get the best out of him and lower those walk levels to closer to league average.

Despite that wildness, he has excellent statcast numbers, a career 4.01 ERA, a 3.79 xERA last year, lots of missed bats, etc…

He has had some durability issues and obviously the command and control is an issue but we have to hope the Os can fix that at least somewhat.  Just get that walk rate under 4 or so.

We’re going to be ok with what we have. I think having Holt in the minors is going to lead to some guys having better than expected seasons. Maybe that’s our pitching prospect ammo to get a pitcher at the deadline.

Also, a Wells vs Hall vs Irvin competition for the #5 spot isn’t the worst thing.

We have one other competition going on in ST. Urias has to hold off Ortiz, Holliday, and Mayo. Obviously clock times affect that one.
