Adding to this, I wonder if Coby came out of that game in the COL series due to some type of nagging injury. The substitution also made sense with the lead, but it was pretty early in the game for a defensive switch. Injury is the only way I can make sense of calling him up and then sticking him on the bench.

Not true.  Holliday is 1 for 1 with a walk off Nastrini.  Nick Maton is 1 for 2 with a homer off him.

I wonder if Hyde was thinking: "Hey, Eflin is throwing a perfecto, being super efficient and saving the bullpen, do I really want Mayo booting something?"

And then immediately Rivera gets a squibbler hit to him that nobody would be able to get the hitter out on. lol

Or his glove.   Teams like the White Sox beat themselves.   We’ve done some of that too.    No problem going with our best defensive unit even if we’re sacrificing some offense which is a maybe at this point.

came here for the gnashing of teeth about Rivera/Mayo. Not disappointed! 

It is within the realm of possibility that Rivera gives us the best chance to win right now. I’d like to see Mayo but it is a defensible move.

Earl in Weaver on Strategy talked about how he liked his best fielders to be the starters most of the time, but he also had 8-9 pitchers covering the entire season.

I hope at least on the day we learn Westburg's cast is off this is a tea leaf they are pretty sure they won't need to push Mayo into an October lineup, whether it is a favorable prognosis on Westy or even Urias.   

Day to day, you might expect LH SP Povich to put more pressure on the 3B/SS behind him.

I think the choice was not necessarily starting Mayo at 3B but at DH instead of Jimenez.  I view that Hyde as thinks the veteran player gives them the best chance to win.

I love to see the kids play as well, but it certainly doesn't piss in my wheaties as much as it does for others who get upset about this stuff.  

I also loved the comment in yesterdays' lineup comments about the bottom of the lineup being horrid.....somehow, the numbers told a different story.

So, going with the reverse jinx theory here, I have to say the tonight's entire lineup is horrid.

If Rivera had done nothing with his opportunities so far, maybe I’d question him playing over Mayo.  But he pretty much won the first Colorado game for us, and has played well otherwise, including yesterday.   So, I have no qualms at all about giving him further opportunities.

I agree he is better defensively and right now has a hot bat so let it play out.  I don’t expect his bat to stay hot long so get what you can out of it for now.

Mayo with a lot to learn on defense and dont think he will learn it here. He"s here to work with m=ML hitting coaches and veterans including Eloy. I was most impressed with the way he just went the pitch and smashed it into RH. He needs to do more of that.
