Jordan Westburg 2024

Quietly has a hit in both games and each drove in runs.

I really can't wait to see what he does with a lot of playing time. He seems to take good ABs and there's no pressure for him to be a thumper in this lineup. He can just be a quiet contributor type sort of like Urias. If he's more than that, fantastic.

Westy is a stud.  He’s a special player.  Not many could have been groomed like him and  thrive (kids so good gonna go ahead and assume he kills it).  Skills, attitude, presence, ability, versatility 💯

I guess I'm not that impressed so far this season. He's had two hits and both were with a drawn-in infield, they were timely, but both are likely easy routine outs if the infield isn't in. He's not smoking the ball. I'm hoping he shows out, but he honestly hasn't been impressive at all at the plate.

Agree, and I’m a Westburg fan.  Even in ST  his timing and plate discipline hasn’t clicked yet.   Too often behind on the fastball and out in front on the offspeed stuff.   Too many chases on high fastballs.  He’s never really had a hot stretch as a major leaguer yet.

Agree with all of this. Like the player and the attitude though.

Both were good ABs though where he worked the count.

Westy has to hit and play well to stay ahead of Holliday.   The 2nd Base battle is on.  Urias is a better defensive 3B than Westy at this point. Holliday can replace Kemp on the roster at any point.  But how the playing time is doled out out is a question.   We will see how Elias handles  it.

Per Statcast, Westburg’s RBI single on Opening Day had a .970 xBA.   So I question if it was likely an out if the infield wasn’t drawn in.  In his other at bats in that game, his batted balls had xBA of .370 and .510, including a ball hit 107.9 mph, the hardest hit ball of the game, on one of his outs.

Yesterday was a different story.  Two pop outs with .000 xBA, a strikeout and a single on a ball with an .080 xBA.

All in all, Westburg hadn’t hit the ball hard in the air yet in his massive sample of 7 PA, but his 2 for 7 is a fair enough representation of the results to be expected from his swings.  In any event, it’s two games.   No big deal either way.

I can’t see Westburg ever ahead of Holliday.  Westburg will be the team’s infield utility player most likely long term if he stays on the roster.  It’s possible he could develop into something more but he won’t unseat Gunner or Holliday.

He doesn't have to unseat either of these two. Right now, he's the team's 3B of the future if Mayo can't get his throwing under control (he's been awful in the two games in Norfolk this year). I'd like to see him playing 3B with Urias at 2B so he gets more reps because when Holliday comes up, he's going to have to move over there.

Doesn't make a ton of sense for me to see him playing 2B right now knowing that he'll need to move.

Now, is he better than Urias at 3B, probably not, even though last year's OAA said he was. But it's not a significant drop off in my opinion and I'd like to see him get as much playing time as possible on the position he'll need to play soon.

I’m guessing he will be at 3B today w/ Mateo at 2B
