Is there any info or ranking for Miguel Rodriguez, a young (18) catcher at FCL who had four more hits today and is now at .346/.849 after going 4 for 4 with a double and homer (56 AB). Before today, career shows 148 AB, .331/.463/.405//.868 at ages 17-18. (Compare Basallo at age 17 in FCL, .278/.350/.424//.774)

Yes - see Tony’s top 75 prospect ratings for last offseason. Miguel was ranked 35th. Strong defensive catcher with plus contact skills. Power was absent last year but emerged yesterday. I’d expect he’ll be top 15 by end of year.

After a 4-12 start, the FCL O’s went 5-0 this week: 2-1, 9-8, 10-3, 12-3, 7-3.   Nice to see some W’s!

Guys hitting include 19-year old AS/3B Edwin Amparo .836 OPS, 19-year old RF Elis Cuevas .983, and 18-year old C Miguel Rodriguez .853.

Another win today, 1-0.   Reed Trimble, on a rehab, singled, walked twice, stole a base and scored the only run.  Both teams had 2 hits each.   Jesus Palacios, 19, with 4 1-hit shutout innings with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Palacios, although a little more unheralded than Morao, has pitched quite well. Now he is a year older, but that was quite the nice start for him today.

Speaking of Morao, he got the save with 2 clean innings.  I believe he struck out the side in the 7th.

Watched the game today and came away very intrigued with Palacios. Obviously his stat line stuck out, but he was hitting 94 and throws a lot of off speed stuff which he has nice control with.

Now the Braves FCL team is the worst team in the league and there was a lot of very bad swings at pitches that were out of the zone, but Palacios looked like he understands how to pitch. He did start to struggle with his control as the outing went on, but definitely a guy to watch.

Also got to see Rodriguez who’s been having a nice run offensively. He is another bat to keep an eye on, got fooled a couple times with off speed stuff, but his first at bat he hit a rocket to the right fielder. Was playing 1st today, not sure if his defense will play at higher levels

In the eye-catching stats department, how about Palacios's line so far: 24 strikeouts / 3 hits allowed (in 14.2 innings). Eight walks also, but still a 0.75 WHIP.

Probably the most surprising part of our ML system this year is the advancement of young Latino pitchers. I tend to compare our system to the old Astros system. Luis Garcia and Christian Javier were never flame throwers. Both seemed to locate well with good sweepers.

The FCL O's stand at 17-22.   They are 11th/15 in runs per game at 4.49, 10th in OPS at .692 (league average .713), 12th in ERA at 5.19, but 5th in runs allowed per game at 4.77.   In case you are wondering how the team's RA/G is far lower than its ERA, it's because the FCL O's have only played about 7 innings per game on average, lowest in the league.  I'm not sure if they scheduled a whole bunch of 7 inning games, or have had a lot of games cut short by rain.  In any event, I'd take ERA as the better indicator relative to the league.

The three offensive standouts have been:

  • RF Elis Cuevas (19), .295/.424/.474, 4 HR, 13 RBI (1st year in the FCL after repeating the DSL with an .856 OPS the 2nd time).  Cuevas received a $150 k bonus in 2022.
  • C/1B Miguel Rodriguez (18), .340/.411/.474, 3 HR, 15 RBI (had an .874 OPS in the DSL last year)
  • 2B/SS/3B Edwin Amparo (19), .237/.387/.381, 3 HR, 14 RBI (repeating the FCL after a .668 OPS last year).  Amparo received a $650 k bonus in 2022.

All three have had 110+ plate appearances.   The only others over 80 PA are Fernando Peguero (.595 OPS)($50 k bonus in 2022) and 2023 $2.3 mm bonus baby Luis Almeyda (.529).   Highly ranked Joshua Liranzo (17) missed the first several weeks and only has 40 PA, but has performed well in that limited span, .294/.400/.353.  Liranzo got a $500 k bonus in 2023.

There's not much to write about on the pitching side:

  • Jesus Palacios (19) has a 3.26 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 13.0 K/9 and 2.33 K/BB in 19.1 IP.  Palacios repeated the DSL last year and had a 1.95 ERA there in his second go.  Palacios received a $90 k bonus in 2022.
  • Andres Parra (19) has a 3.72 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 2.57 K/BB in 19.1 I.  Parra was promoted to the FCL partway through last season and saw limited action there (3.12 ERA in 8.2 IP) after posting a 0.00 ERA in his second DSL season in 14 IP.   Parra got a $10 k bonus in 2022.

The other hot pitching prospect going into the season, 18-year old Francisco Morao, is struggling with a team-worst 8.50 ERA in 18 IP, after posting a 3.89 ERA in the DSL last year, with an 8.00 BB/9 rate being his big problem.  Morao got a $200 k signing bonus in 2023.
