I think there’s a strong chance that we can still blame J Angelos for this. Whatever deal he made with T Rowe to give them naming rights to the stadium must’ve been somewhat settled. I don’t know for sure but I think Rubenstein may have been a little bit hamstrung by that surprise and is now offering concessions to T Rowe so they don’t take legal actions for backing out of the naming rights deal.

It's possible.

If the rumours were true that Angelos and T Rowe agreed and/or were working towards naming rights to OPACY, there were still the minutia of the MSA agreeing to anything from a naming perspective...and we all know how irked everybody was w/ Angelos about lying about selling the club.

Now, is it possible that this is Rubenstein's concession to T Rowe after acquiring the team? Sure. But he's going balls to the wall otherwise. Obnoxious batches on the uniform, huge branding in the OF, and the most prominent location in the stadium with ostentatious branding...not exactly subtle. So, while it might have stemmed the tide regarding naming rights to the stadium, it almost feels like it's a foregone conclusion that it will soon happen. After all, Rubenstein and Arougheti are private equity boys. And this is what they do. They are never/rarely going to turn down cashflow.

The big question for me remains whether any of this money will find its way back into the on the field product. So far Rubenstein has been pretty mealy-mouthed regarding increased spending on FA deals or extensions for the young stars. That said, I'd rather action than talk, but to me the honeymoon period for Rubenstein is over. This trade deadline and offseason will speak volumes. I'd love to see this organization be ran like some combination of the Braves/Astros.

I just accepted that commercialism is part of American sports industry.  However it doesn’t mean I have to like it .  I developed a habit of focusing on the actions taking place on the field , the court , the track , the rink , the ring , etc , etc . It doesn’t take away my enjoyment . Just my opinion and feedback .

I think it's gotten out of control. Count me as someone who will never support selling the naming rights to the stadium.

T Rowe can you see by the dawn's early light?  That ought to be worth $10 mill/ yr by itself.

More worried about this part:
ROWE!....say, does that star spangled banner yet wave

This brought back horrible flashbacks to yesterday's catastrophic National Anthem.

Even this wouldn't be as bad as whatever the hell that was last night.

It’s the commercialization of sports and it’s unavoidable. Getting your panties in a bunch about a sign at the stadium is just a waste of time at this point. I’d rather it not happen but that’s just capitalism - there’s never enough money no matter how much you have, that’s the American way!

As evidenced by the HR Derby last night, which not only had commercials between every two hitters, but also commercials in the middle of each round, during the ‘timeout’ period. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rules allowed for a timeout just for the sole purpose of selling more ad time. Lame, but it’s not going to get any better, ever. In fact it’s likely to get far worse, so we have two options - learn to deal with/ignore it, or find a new pastime.

This is the way.

As far as Rubenstein goes, I don’t fault him for taking advantage of additional revenue streams - again, capitalism almost requires it. You can’t be the only team (not to say the Os literally are) that isn’t taking advantage. But if payroll doesn’t increase relatively significantly in the next couple of years, then he’ll be no better than Angelo’s in reality. I think it will increase, but no one can be sure it will, until we see some contracts with a real financial commitment to them. And if we don’t see that, then eventually I’ll stop watching. I have no interest in developing the game’s stars of tomorrow, for other fan bases to get to cheer on. They need to keep some of these guys.

I’m with you. I really hope we at least negotiated a fair deal that provides an abundance of ad revenue because the logos and branding is very prominent at this point. It’s not just a small patch.

Rubenstein still isn’t in the spotlight for me yet because I would also just be having a good time and making fans if I acquired a professional sports team. I don’t really care about increased spending at the deadline as much as I care about the quality of players we get (so Elias is on the hot seat more than Rubenstein in my mind).

But at the end of the day, I really don’t care about all the gimmicks (funny commercials, hat giveaways, Mr. Splash guest appearances, etc). If we don’t eventually see payroll expand, long-term agreements/extensions happen, and perennial commitment toward winning then fan sentiment is going to sour quickly.

Speaking of Mr Rubinstein  , his trade deadline is coming in two weeks .  We then can see what moves Orioles made . If nothing happens and Elias makes a speech of excuses  ?

Then in five months, the official winter meetings commence, no free agents signings  made ?  Elias holds another press conference filled with excuses ?

Then maybe we could conclude that Rubenstein is the more wealthier and friendlier John Angelos

    • Firing Hyde would be a nonsensical move right now. A knee jerk reaction. Baseball is a long season, full of ups and downs. He is a steady force, and definitely imperfect. Part of his appeal as a manager is that he has a fairly calm exterior, but he is fiery. He doesn’t just flip his lid for some minor thing. He does make mistakes, and tends to over-manage, at times, with matchups and such. And perhaps he is loyal to a fault, but his players live him for it. If we are going to blame Hyde for this mess, I think it misguided. You can say this is a very flawed and inexperienced team. Its construction has sacrificed some defense for production. Injuries to Mateo and Westburg have hurt. We have infielders who cannot execute a proper tag, or make a basic throw on the run. Mullins is banged up, again. We can certainly lay some bricks at Elias’ feet for team construction. How many LH bats do we need? Adding Slater was actually a good move. Eloy Jimenez, I actually like that too. We have watched this team change over from the hungry grinders to the young stars. We do seem to have guys who want to be stars, rather than be good at baseball and win games. I don’t care how many home runs we hit. Kevin Brown talks about that like I should actually care. Or what the exit velo is on a ground ball out. I want to see guys play smart, with a good approach. Shorten up with two strikes. Execute a bunt, or a hit and run. I want them to play team baseball and win. The Astros dugout is so much more engaged than we are. They have a few stars, but those guys just have some good solid players who are always hungry and in the game. When the camera pans into their dugout, look how engaged they are.
    • Roy, you don't have to defend yourself or your fandom to anyone - particularly some marginal poster on this site. You are one of the posters that make this site special aand we are fortunate to have you around. May your fandom last forever! Plus, hope is a Tony Tatter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
    • Last year the team never gave him a lead. My guess is he would be a lot more willing to extend Bautista and Cano in those one run situations. With off days and such he will have everybody available most games unlike the regular season.
    • I don't really buy the injured cavalry narrative. We don't really know if or when some of these guys are coming back or how they'll perform. Plus, we don't know who else will replace them on the injured list. Mountcastle, Mullins and Rutschman already not full strength, for starters...
    • Thats what I thought the thread was about. The other Soto, I cant believe poeple are even responding to that.
    • Mullins will be worth his salary, in the abstract.  But sometimes when you go to a nice restaurant, you have to decide between the nice bottle of wine, the filet mignon, or the fancy dessert to stay within your budget.   So do you want to spend $9 mm on a part-time CF, or we would you rather trade him for something of value and spend the money on other needs?
    • First, you don't know me. I've been on this board for at least 15 years. I was an Oriole batboy for two seasons . My home is an Oriole shrine.I don't really care what you think of me as a fan, or for that matter how you feel I am "in reality". I bleed Orange and Black and wear my heart on my sleeve and every other cliche' about being a fan you could write.I'm also very accepted by my family as a bit obsessed about my team.If that appears insufferable to you, so be it. But I'll tell you this, when the Orioles are rolling I'm euphoric, and when they struggle, I lament and feel down. You might call that "weak as a feather in the wind"(wasn't that a Bob Dylan song?), but that's  just called being a fan....or at least a different kind of fan than you would like me to be. So, go ahead, rip me as a fan.I know who and what I am . I may not be for everybody here, or frankly ANYBODY here, but I LOVE my Birds. One person's passion and obsession is your "weak as a feather".Say whatever you want. I'll keep being the fan I've always been for 60 years.
