I think

  1. You are suffering from observational bias.
  2. Fouling off pitches has as much to do with the quality of the pitches as it does the hitter.  Povich doesn't have swing and miss stuff.

Povich throws a lots of pitches. I don’t know what that means, but it seems that it means that he’s not fooling anybody, he’s getting a lot of contact, but it’s not hard contact, and they’re going to wear them out. He’s at 40 pitches already and he’s not even through two innings.

Who is going to put a guy in the lineup just to foul off pitches?

It does feel to me that some are better than others, and some can do so effectively. Like Santander, I feel like he gets into really deep at-bats compared to others, just fouling off pitch after pitch. I do not, however, have any data to back-up said feelings other than what I've seen.

      The Padres probably should have kept to this thought of not trading some guys.  That trade for Soto could turn out to be one of the worst trades in history.  Makenzie Gore looking like top of rotation pitcher, CJ Abram’s looking like future multiple all star type player, James Wood could be one of best players in game in couple years, Robert Hassell another very talented prospect. Jarlin Sousa young flamethrower but has struggled in lower minors at 20.   That trade changed their entire franchise along with Nationals as well. The friars did move Soto for a decent package to Yankees but not nearly the upside and talent.

      I find this news pretty shocking, given our board "consensus" about the lack of pitching. Thx for the heads up. Granted, all those SP are still at high A or below, and the RP are only rated 35 or less FV, but given the impressive quantity of arms, some should pop above that in time.

      I have never had any problem with Scott Boras.   We’ll see how he does with Rubenstein and Elias, but it’s not his job to facilitate dynasty-building by the Orioles.  His job is to get the best deal for his clients, considering the clients’ objectives.

      ...and yet when everyone was clamoring for a trade for a #1 and we acquired Burnes, when no one was really expecting THAT, we had a staff lined up - that if it had been and remained healthy - was a top SP staff in the league.  I'm not sure how one comes to the conclusion that they need to explain something.  They, indeed, had depth enough in the farm and from acquisitions - both in waivers and FA's - to consider a 6 man rotation - a luxury. For me, their error is not in picking, identifying, or developing pitchers - it is in the area of realistic expectations in rehab or recovery in pitchers.  We banked a lot on pitchers a lot of us were surprised such a big role was being expected of them.

      I’d trade anyone for the right return (except Gunnar, Adley, Burnes).   However, it’s more likely than not that there won’t be a deal that works with Holliday, Mayo, or Basallo because at that point whoever we’re trading for (Logan Gilbert, Logan Webb, even Skubal) will be of such quality that they will be considered in the “untouchable” category from the other side and we’d likely need to overpay.  I think it’s more likely that we trade Kjerstad or Cowser but even then it needs to be the right deal.  If such a deal isn’t available, Elias can likely get someone like Scherzer, Fedde, Quintana, Severino, Gray, Blackburn, etc. for a package without a top 100 guy. Regardless of the top end deals, we should trade Norby, Stowers, and Urias for whatever we can get (at least relief help) as they don’t have spots and their value will only go down.
