The silver lining for me is that our two month long slump has basically been .500 baseball.  I’ve seen slumps way worse than that, even for good teams.  I feel like if we just got a few things to click, we could return to winning baseball.  We do have some important pieces that will return at some point who will help.  

Also, after the Astros and Dodgers gauntlet, our schedule eases up for a while: 3 at COL, 3 CWS, 3 TBR, 3 at BOS, 3 at DET, 3 at SFG, 3 DET.  Let’s just hope we stay afloat for these next 7.   

 

The thing is, it’s been worse than .500. They’re 25-30 in their last 55 games with a -39 run differential. That’s a 74 win season pro rated, with a -115 run differential. Only LAA, COL, MIA, and CWS have a worse run differential per game this year and only WSH, OAK and the above mentioned teams have a worse winning percentage. 

They are also 30-25 against teams below .500, which is worse than their record against teams above .500. The soft schedule isn’t going to help if they play the way they have recently, or play down to their opponent like they have even when they were doing well.

This season is trying to make me cry. No back-to-back playoff seasons since 96-97. Think that'll continue. Funny to say about a team 19 games above .500.

Don't look now but we're only 2.5 games up in the Wild Card race. With 3 more against Houston and 3 with the Dodgers coming up, things aren't looking good.

We are up 5.5 on Boston. They have gained 1 game on us since Aug 1.

With this garbage hitting approach, I doubt we even beat or win series against the Rockies or White Sox at this point. There should be a shake up tomorrow and fire the hitting coaches for this crap the last 2-3 months. At least send a message and maybe change the messaging.

The 5.5 game gap above Boston is the one that matters for making the playoffs.

My suggestion is to adjust your expectations if you haven’t already.  This team has trended badly for 2+ months and is in start of a free fall.  If by some miracle other wild card contenders collapse simultaneously, then maybe we back in.   But don’t expect a playoff appearance this season.   They haven’t played like a playoff worthy team since early June.

Among other reasons why the team still has a very good shot of making the playoffs is the September schedule. 2 Bad teams, 3 (and the Tigers twice) mediocre teams, 1 team fighting for a chance and 2 good teams at the very end. That's 21 games against teams that could allow some very positive momentum to get going as (hopefully) some bullpen arms start to come back. 

I did just look at the Royals schedule and sheesh. Slacks off a bit in the middle of the month, but it's going to be a tense month for their fans.
