Has Dean Kremer said whether he will pitch on Rosh Hashanah?

That's a really good question. And I reckon that's playing big in the decision.

Seems to me it's a no brainer. Pitch Zach Eflin Game 2. That's your 1-2 punch. It's why you acquired him.

In 2016 he said no, which would prevent him from pitching Thursday.

Q: Would you play a game on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur?

A: No, I would not.

I'm trying to figure out if there's any real reason they wouldn't go with Eflin. Or if it is just posturing to make KC slightly less sure of the game plan.

Two reasons:

1) Kremer has dominated the Royals…Eflin has not.

2) Saving Eflin to pitch game 1 vs NY and having him and Burnes 4 of 5 games…and if you lose either of the first 2 games vs KC, you have Eflin for game 3.

Kremer this year against the Royals: 4.91 ERA in 2 games, 11 IP, 6 ER (3 ER in each of those starts). I'm not so sure that's dominating the Royals unless you're talking about in 2023 (he didn't face them), or 2022. Yeah, Eflin stunk against the Royals the 1 time he pitched against them this year.  But that was during a really bad stretch for him (6 games) when he gave up 4 or more runs in 4 of those starts.

Now, your second point makes some sense.

What if you win Game 1 and need just one more win?   You could try to win with Kremer in G2, and if you succeed you have Eflin and Burnes lined up for G1 and G2 in New York, which is ideal.   If you lose Game 2, you still have Eflin for Game 3, so it's not like you'd not be pitching your top two guys in the series, just not in the expected order.

Sorry, hadn't read this when I wrote my post echoing #2.

If that is still the case, you would think they would have planned in advance and had him go Sunday instead of Suarez, and have Suarez for Game 3.   I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have already taken this into account.

OK, I'm not Jewish and I've never had reason to research their holidays but didn't Rosh Hashanah fall on September 17th last season?

If I'm mistaken, sorry it was an honest mistake.

Looks like it began on Friday, Sep 15 and ended on Sunday, Sep 17.

Were we on Sunday Night Baseball that Sunday 9/17?    My Google of Rosh Hashanah 2023 said it ended at sundown the Sunday.

I'm not Jewish either but I am baseball, and in childhood the Sandy Koufax stories I remembered most were about Yom Kippur.

The Google also reminded me Kremer's turn as Texas finished the sweep was just 2 days after October 7th.

Let's get a sweep, guys.

It's a 48 hour event spanning three days from sunset to sunset two days later. The two evenings, particularly the first one, are typically the most significant. Since last Sep 17th was the third day, it's possible he was more willing to pitch that day than on one of the prior two evenings. It's also possible Dean just changed his perspective and pitching on the holiday is not an issue for him.

In any event, if pitching on the holiday is an issue, it might be relevant for both Wednesday and Thursday, since the holiday begins at sundown Wednesday.

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
