3:4, Pirates select Mychal Givens, SS/RHP, Plant HS, TAMPA

Not sure if they'll use him as a position player or pitcher, but I'd lean towards putting him on the mound.

Givens has been evaluated at a national level repeatedly. Over time, he has evolved as a prospect, going from hitter to pitcher and back again. He has a strong, athletic body and physical frame, with elite tools including one of the best arms in the draft. He's reached 97 mph off the mound in short bursts and still shows above-average velocity from a low arm slot, pitching Plant High deep into the state playoffs. While some scouts do like him better on the mound, most see him as a reliever and see more value as a position player.

Great job by everyone. It was a blast.

Trying to give everyone some Rep Love but I need to spread it around first.

Using Stotle's List:

Baltimore Orioles select at 2:5

Todd Glaesmann, OF, HS (TX)

Other options would be Goodwin and Marisnick. Renfroe and Heathcott would also be options if their cost is not a concern. Basically, we are looking for a toolsy guy with high upside . . . or a hard throwing HS pitcher.

Time to sleep.

I hope toolsy doesn't mean, athlete first, hope he can learn to play baseball..poor plate discipline.

In otherwords another Avery. I agree the Orioles need to stay away from toolsy players with high picks just for the fact that the minor league system does not have a good history of developing these picks.

Maybe in Florida it worked out, but for whatever reason, all toolsy picks turn out to be duds for the O's.

Based on this mock draft, it sounds like it will be excruciating hearing the last 10 names prior to our second round pick.

What a tease if two of the better Indiana guys, Franklin, Malm and Givens all disappear before our pick!

SG will like the Glaesman description in BA - like Drew Stubbs, but with less athleticism and better baseball skills.

I would have taken Mark Krauss or Tom Mendonca there. Both finished with 27 HR this year.

Yeah because Avery sucks...

Dude's 19 years old in the Sally League hitting .293 and has done nothing but get stronger all year.

Really, Avery is looking better and better all the time. And, I remain high on Hoes, too. Last year's draft could turn out to be one of our best, especially if Drake, Zagone and/or Bundy turn into ML pitchers, as well. Toolsy doesn't have to mean an athlete that doesn't know how to play baseball.

If Avery has another 1-2 months like May (and so far he has been even stronger in June), he will rocket up the prospect charts. I raised this in another thread, but he may force management's hand w/r/t in-season promotion this year. We might not be able to hold him back.
