Do have the stomach to root through what you are suggesting?

Do you want to do a full tear down and rebuild for 2015? Do you want to watch a replacement level SS for the next 3 seasons?

The main reason I don't is because even if they trade off Hardy and others for prospects if they don't improve in the draft, the international market and developing players they won't be competing in 2015 either.

As is there is a small chance the young pitching catches fire like it did late last year and the team becomes watchable.

I would also like to add that Hardy would still be tradeable and potentially more valuable with the extension.

Fair enough. I just prefer a team that is a winner not just one that is watchable.

You do make a good point that Hardy would be tradeable later but I doubt his value will be much higher based on his history. Could be wrong but guys who have a history of getting hurt, generally continue to get hurt a lot.

This is a team even with Hardy that still has holes at 1B, 3b (Reynolds is a DH), LF, 2B .... needs at least 2 SP if not 3 depending on the Matusz outcome and will likely need a arm or two in the pen. Have you seen the free agents available....your not coming close to addressing all that in a way that will help you compete via free agency unless you spend megabucks and this team does not do that

Teams that rebuild successfully rarely hold on to players that are at their maximum value in terms of what they can get for them when they are going to be a losing team

All that said I like JJ and will be happy to root for him just think its not the right move at this time.

I'd hold firm on no NTC.

I am guessing you wouldn't get a deal then. From Rosenthal on twitter

One holdup in Hardy talks with #Orioles has been concern by Hardy that O's will flip him. O's do not give out no-trade clauses.
Hardy deal with #Orioles figures to address his concern over trade in some fashion. May even be impetus for third guaranteed year.

If I had to guess I would think being traded twice in the last couple of years is part of the reason Hardy is amenable to extending.

Hmm, well that deal seems reasonable, and although I'd like to see what we can get for him in a trade, I suppose some sort of plan beats no plan at all. The O's better be preparing to make a big push this offseason or else this doesn't make much sense to me.

    • Right..if the Orioles can trade for Brenton Doyle (my favorite top target), why should we care that his salary is low? Also in that scenario, Mullins is likely gone, so payroll would actually go down I believe. But someone like Bemore wins would still complain because the payroll isn’t where he thinks it should be.
    • From here https://www.mlb.com/orioles/stats/ops/regular-season
    • Where are you getting your stats from that's not correct looking at OPS.
    • On the O's this year, Martinez would have been: 5th in OPS 5th in AVG 6th in HRs in 120 games
    • I think PFF is grading Roquan badly because the safeties behind him are playing like ass and it's making him look bad.  If teams are going to attack him over the middle on crossing routes with WRs (like KC did with Rice) he doesn't really stand much of a chance if the safeties behind him don't throw him a bone.  He's still a huge help in the run game.   In general I think PFF assigns a little too much blame to linebackers on passes over the middle, so unless you're an elite coverage guy at LB it's really hard to grade well.  The flip side to this is that teams probably need to adjust their coverage areas to account for the fact that LBs aren't going to be able to hold down WRs for long.
    • Thanks. This tells me what my eyes have seen with Roquan. He's been a liability in coverage and the fact that Simpson is ahead of him is not good for our defensive leader. Do you have the PFF grades for offense too?
    • What you want is perfectly reasonable.  But you seem entirely to focused on money.  The team needs to work to improve.  I don't care what it costs, you shouldn't either.  They are going to spend money and payroll will be higher next year and the year after that.  We need them to make improvements and some of that is rightfully going to come from within and not cost much. The improvements that are needed are going to cost too, I'm not saying they wont.  But ownership and the GM should simply work in tandem to make sure the team has what it needs.  I am not really concerned about how much that costs because it should be able to be done without jumping this particular team into say top ten in payroll.
