86 Pitches (65 Strikes, 21 Balls.)

7.33 innings.

3 runs.

1 walk.

7 strikeouts.

Even an average throw by Nick Markakais in right-field would have cut down Alexei Ramirez when he tagged up and scored the White Sox' 3rd run of the game.

ALSO:

Chen retired 20 of the last 25 batters that he has faced (20 out of 23 before ceding 2 singles just previous to departing the game.)

Before this season, Wei-Yin Chen's walk rate was solid.

Not including 2 intentional walks, Chen ceded 94 bases on balls in 319.67 innings pitched, for an average of 1 walk every 3.4 innings.

This season, not including 2 intentional walks, Chen has ceded 23 bases on balls in 143.67 innings pitched, for an average of 1 walk every 6.25 innings.

Outstanding.

Chen's W.H.I.P. has only modestly improved (1.286 in the 2012-2013 seasons combined, as compared to 1.225 in 2014) because he has also given up a lot of hits, particularly in the first 2 months of the season ...... but I'm still very encouraged by the fact that his previously (2012-2013) already solid control has become exemplary this season (2014.)

Good post. It is so much fun watching these guys put up quality starts one after another. Chen is the anti-Ubaldo. So-so stuff but outstanding command. Honestly if Buck wants to give him the ball for Game 1 of the playoffs I am not going to question it.

(vs. D-RAYS, 8/26)

3 walks in only 4.67 innings.

VERY uncharacteristically high for Chen this season.

As noted after his last start:

Chen returns to 2014 form, in terms of walk rate and strikes-to-balls ratio.
