There might be hope yet.

They can't get it to under 6. Only 6 minutes left...They need to clamp down on defense and they need someone other than McRoberts to be able to do some scoring because Bowers and Isby won't see the court anymore in all likelihood, so he will have tougher matchups.

Since Jan 14:

12.5 ppg

4.25 apg(which would be good for 7th in conference)

1.75 TO

2.4:1 A/TO ratio

39.1 % 3pt(would be good for 5th in conference)

Those are solid but unspectacular numbers. They are hardly AWFUL n umbers and anyone who has watched Duke and watched him has seen a player who is obviously healthy and in better shape right now and someone who is playing much better.

This is true, the Paulus prior to the last month or so and the Paulus now are pretty much night & day in comparison. He's playing with in himself much more, and not turning the ball over nearly as much (which was a huge problem for him early on).

Terps gotta be careful not to try and milk this clock too much. IMO they need to keep playing aggressively and try and expand this lead. What a game by the Terps so far.

I have watched Duke since, as you like to point out, they are on TV all the time.

Do you think it is a coincidence that the more Paulus has played and the more active role he takes in the offense the worse the performance of your team has become?

He is AWFUL.

However you try to chop it up and skew the numbers through different splits, everything shows that the guy's portfolio, at very best, is slightly above adequate.

When you actually watch him perform on the court I think it is pretty obvious that the guy is tremendously overrated and often a detriment to his team's performance.

I agree that at best he is slightly above adequate, but from everything i've heard the last couple months I don't know how you can say he's tremendously overrated. And you're contradicting yourself by saying he's aweful in caps, and then acknowledging that he may be slightly above adequate. Sure, everyone loves to hate Duke, and their prospects that don't quite pan out. But in fairness I don't think you can put Duke's recent stretch on Paulus, he has played much better but isn't getting much support either.

What the hell are yout alking about? I said over the past month, he has been very solid and he has. His defense has been good, he is turning it over much less and the rest of his numbers are where you want them to be.

No one has ever said the guy is the best PG in the country or even the conference. But he is much better now than he was early and that is because he is healthy and practicing and whatnot(which he wasn't doing after the foot and wrist issues before the season started).

I am not cherry picking anything.

And Duke has actually not played poorly in any game during this losing streak before tonight. They haven't played well the last 3 minutes of a game in a long time and because of that, they are now 5-6 in conference.

The offense has gone from scoring 68ppg up until Jan 14 to 73 ppg going over the past month. So, the argument doesn't hold water either.

Well I'm quite satisfied right now.

Not to say that I don't believe in karma, but a certain someone's constant shot-taking at Maryland most certainly contributed to this loss...go 'head neg rep me again. Could care less. We're not out of the tourney yet!!!!

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

MARYLAND!!!!!!

No, I am not contradicting myself.

I said the numbers show that the best anyone could possibly say is that he is slightly above adequate. However, when you actually watch him perform you basically realize that his numbers don't tell the tale of how truly disruptive he is.

He can't create off the dribble.

He can't consistently beat a trap or full-court pressure.

He's a bad shooter.

He turns the ball over FAR too much.

He makes absolutely stupid decisions when it comes to shot selection.

He is not athletic enough.

Not only do I put this recent stretch on Paulus, I think this is a top 10 team whose point guard has destroyed their season.

I really like Nelson and Scheyer. McRoberts is a great college low-post player. I have even been impressed with several of their reserves, and I've totally done a 180 on their impressive defense.

No offense but this is quite possibly the dumbest thing you have ever said on here.

Rob, they arent' that good, and i don't see how you can think they're a lock to make the tourney. They're going to more than likely have a 5 game losing streak after they play BC this week. They may win 20 games, but let's say they finish 6-10 in conference, then what?

A much needed, and well earned victory from Maryland. But now the million dollar question, why on God's green earth can't we play like this against team's not named Duke? As sweet as this win is, it frustrates me even more. My God this was a MUCH different team than we've seen pretty much all season.

    • Why does everybody want to jump and label a kid so fast? What is this, his 2nd major-league season? Yes, certainly they shouldn't go into next year thinking he's a lock for 30+ starts and 180-200 innings but we can't say he's already reached his peak either.
    • And their defense is very good. To put things in perspective, the Tigers collective dWAR is +0.5. The Orioles is -2.8. Minnesota -4.1, Yankees -0.3, Houston -0.1, Seattle +2.0, Royals at +2.5. The Royals really standout as most of that value is driven by Fermin (catcher) and Witt.  But I think my point is that the Tigers have excellent pitching (starting pitching and bullpen) as well as excellent defense. And they're not putrid with the bats.  I would say the one saving grace about the Tigers is they don't run much.
    • We could have easily swept Detroit in Baltimore, the lineup we have now is not the lineup they faced. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, just win.
    • Both of them are important to consider here. They could have a mediocre offense every single game of the season, but if the pitching is elite (and it is!), it'll carry them.  We have 6 games against the Tigers this year. And yes, most of them were without the cadre of regulars. But here are the offensive numbers against them: .211/.282/.392 - .674 OPS They scored 20 runs in 6 games against them. Barely scraping 3 R/G. And a good portion of them coming in *1* game.  Out of the WC potentials the O's could face, here are their R/G: Royals: 29 in 6 games = 4.8 R/G Twins: 22 in 3 = 7.3 R/G Mariners: 27 in 6 = 4.5 R/G Tigers: 20 in 6 = 3.3 R/G Out of all the playoff teams, the best RA/G are the Mariners (3.75), Guardians (3.85), and Tigers (4.96). For the playoffs, you want to look at who you're facing on the bump. Which team scares you the most? Because if you can't hit against the team, it doesn't matter what the opposing offense is.  Also you'll want to consider the best fielding teams, too.   Seems to me you'd want to face the team you matchup best against *and* who has the worst defense and worst pitching, because presumably your 3 starters (Burnes, Eflin, Kremer) should be able to hold teams in check.
    • I'd prefer Detroit - they've been so hot for so long they should be due to cool off. KC has been just the opposite.
    • I'd say the Royals...pitch around Witt and Salvy Perez who seems to have had our number in recent years.  The rest of their lineup isn't too imposing. Wacha  -a guy I wanted this offseason and was laughed at for wanting him- has a 2.64 ERA over his last 15 starts.  He's the soft-tossing type that gives our lineup fits and, IIRC, he was great against us earlier this year.  Lugo has had a great year, so has Ragans.  Their starters are good. But they're 3-7 over their last 10 while the Tigers are 8-2.  A lot of the postseason, IMO, is catching teams at the right/wrong time.  This could all change by next week but the Tigers are hot, the Royals are not... Then again, I said I wanted to face Texas in the first round last year and look what happened.  So who knows.
    • Would much rather face KC and to me it’s not close.    game 1 agains Skubal is an L. They’ve proven they can beat us with a bullpen game, a bullpen only behind CLE as best in the AL.
