Dustin McGowan

Probably the most interesting FA RH reliever on the market still. Would be a good add, especially if they can get him on a MiL deal.

The Orioles have expressed interest in free-agent reliever Dustin McGowan, according to multiple industry sources. The Orioles have reached out to McGowan?s representatives, but they are believed to be among several teams interested in the former Toronto Blue Jays right-hander.

What hath Wade Davis wrought?

Like almost anyone, relief numbers better. Last year's relief split: 43 IP, 36/16 K/BB, 3.35/1.16 era/whip. That's a good WHIP for such an ugly walk rate - just 34 hits in 43 relief innings, which is exactly the same the trendy Carlos Carrasco had as a reliever last year.

Granted McGowan's days of youth and upside are gone, but he'd be an interesting arm in the mix. Health-provided, he's a qualified major league pitcher.

He'd come to camp on a minor league deal if they signed him, so I don't really see a cost barrier.

He was 3-1 with a 3.35 ERA last year as a reliever. 45 games, 43 innings only 16 walks, if you can get that guy to show up at your spring training on a minor league deal then you certainly should.

Worth a look and nice insurance if we have injuries in camp.

The RH relief market is pretty depressed right now. I think he has to settle for a MiL deal. I think he might already be signed if he had a ML offer. Jose Veras just had to settle for a MiL deal with the Braves, and look at his numbers the last 2 years (minus a brief hiccup as closer with the Cubs).

You can if you don't have enough roster spots and you can't move some of the ones you have. I'm not against signing McGowan but it should be on a minor league contract so we can start him at Norfolk if we have to. DD is most likely going to have to move a couple of bullpen arms. Let's hope he can get something back for them.

My thinking is along the same line as yours. I wouldn't offer him a major league deal, but it never hurts to have him in camp to show what he can do.
