O's acquire Franderlyn Romero

Indeed, perhaps this is Duquette's idea of a market inefficiency. At least the pick and the slots are not for nothing -- the team gets three guys in the farm system so it's basically and Barker, Belicek and Romero vs the 76th pick and two international signees.

Actually, no. These are two slots for the international signing year ending in about a month. The Orioles were pretty obviously not going to use those slots at all. The Reds, however, are already over their allotment, and this trade enables them to have no penalties. They avoid a penalty, the Orioles lose nothing, and the Orioles get a guy that may just turn into something.

Which to me isn't as good as actually scouting and signing players with the slots but a lot better than nothing.

Many other people make the same mistake of not understanding this. The Orioles international budget is evidently set at a point that those two slots are not going to be spent. Right or wrong. Not based on the deal yesterday.

Many people feel the way you do. Evidently the Orioles had decided they were not spending on 16 year olds again.

And to think a certain someone said the O's would be expanding player acquisitions in light of giving up the picks for Gallardo/Fowler.

Romero with a good start today.

53 IP and only 1 HR allowed this year. Really good WHIP and K/BB ratio. 2nd year off of TJ surgery. Looks like he's having a breakout year at age 23. Similar to what Gunkel did last year after we got him.

Good news on a pitiful day for the Orioles rotation.
