Mancini. Cisco, Trumbo, Alvarez and Wieters

I agree, we probably wont sign either.

I disagree strongly with some of the Hangout Posters, who feel that any catcher can thrown in there and get the job done.

Catchers that can play plus defense, call a good game, and have a decent bat are in very short supply.

Sign Wieters and let Trumbo and Hardy go. Of course Hardy we have through 17, but think the money could be spend with the foreknowledge his salary is temporary.

It is very concerning to me that I haven't even heard the Orioles approaching Machado and Schoop with offers. Machado moreso. Schoop could/should be an offseason extension.

I feel pretty certain that the Orioles are going to trade Machado. There is simply no way you just let him walk a 1st round pick.

DD does most of his work behind the scenes, I dont believe Jones or Hardy resign was leaked before it was announced.

I hope you are wrong about Machado, I really do.

Have you compared Wiether's WAR vs. other catchers this year? I summit that Trumbo is the team's MVP thus far. He has protected others in the lineup. His presence in the lineup is important if the sp is not improved next season.

IMO, catcher WARs don't compare well against other position players.

There is so much to the catching game, framing the pitch, calling the pitch, calling pitchouts, etc, not all of this is capture by metrics.

Pitch outs are called from the dugout. Just FYI.

That might make sense if Wieters had played every game or most of the games the O's. He has played in 64 of 87 games. Not all as catcher. Thus his WAR rating is relevant. Actually all of those metrics you mentioned are captured and compared. Check out Fangraphs.

Some are, but the dugout doesn't call them all, if Matt sees somebody too far out, he can call a pitchout. I have also see him fire directly to first.

Depends on how much trust the manager has in his catcher.

He has started 57 of the 64 games as catcher, been a DH twice and substitution into the game as catcher.

There is absolutely zero chance Trumbo is traded.

We need starting pitching, obviously, and the teams that are willing to trade pitching will not want a 30 year old player who will become a free agent after the season. They want prospects.

If I have to pick one to re-sign, it's Wieters. He's important to the pitching staff and I think Trumbo would be easier to replace.

And how many has he caught off first? or on his own pitch outs? vs. other catchers? Wieters is #18 in WAR of all MLB catchers but has the 3rd highest salary. How do you square that?

Trumbo is #8 among RF in WAR in the majors. Who exactly are you replacing him with?

    • That joke was probably in a lot of people’s heads but those people decided not to go there.  We’ll give you a mulligan. P.S. Not for nothing but if I’m walking up behind a teammate with a bat in his hand I’m making enough noise until he looks and sees me there.
    • Guys like Bradfield and Beavers aren't as valuable as Ortiz was last year. Right now we have 3 prospects rated at or better (and they are all better) than Ortiz last year: Mayo, Basallo, and Kjerstad. Can we afford to deal one of those three for another rental TOR this off-season?   As of today, I wouldn't feel great about that.
    • I don't think those guys are going to get you anything near TOR. I don't think we can afford to annually give up a couple top 100 prospects for a rental TOR- at least not yet. Plenty were willing to part w Cowser last year, but how would we feel about our OF situation this year, and going forward, without Cowser in the mix?
    • Idiots looking for attention on social media are claiming Mullins did it on purpose.  Where are we at in society?  Also, @Roy Firestone attempt at a joke just now is pathetic. Hoping for the best for Jorge - if it is a concussion, they are never fun (I've had way too many).  Also, hope Cedric is able to move past this freak accident and focus on getting his hitting going.  We need him.
    • That on deck swing that Mullins hit Mateo with... was probably Mullins best contact with a bat  on the day.
    • I think the Ubaldo Jimenez contract is still the largest the O's have ever given out to a free agent starter.   Personally, I think it makes more sense to spend big on an elite free agent starter than on elite position players.   Of course they have to be cautious in how and who they identify as elite, but I think they should bid for Burnes, and not just a token bid -- a real bid.
