Send Gausman to Norfolk as soon as the game is over. He is not helping the team right now.

Gausman doesn't have options.   He'll have to straighten himself out at the major league level.

This start wasn't nearly as bad as the debacle in Cincinnati. Betts and Ramirez were looking for the first pitch FB and crushed them, but other than those mistakes Boston didn't really hit KG that hard. He wasn't digging himself into hitter's counts. I'm not panicking.

What I don't get is why the pitch that was supposed to be his bread and butter (the changeup) is basically a non-factor for him, and that's really been the case as far as I can tell since last season. Almost like it's been given up on for some reason?

Gausman should have to pitch out of the pen ala Ubaldo if he's going to keep rocking a 7+ ERA. He would have more success in one inning stints where he can really air it out I suspect. He's awful to watch pitch, just awful.

Being able to throw harder in shorter appearances isn't going to solve his command problem. It might worsen it.

He pitched fine out of the pen when he was last there. I believe he has less to think about. His secondary pitches are garbage and having to navigate a lineup more than once is difficult for him.

I'm far from convinced that Gausman is unable to return to how well he pitched the second half of last season.

You want to move our potentially best starter to the pen after five starts that aren't to your liking?

There is no reason to think Gausman won't settle down and return to form.  It's way early.  He was out best starter in 2016 and our second best in 2015.

I'm not worried.....yet.

Just as a quick look in Baseball Reference, I had found 680 games by starters where the pitcher pitched 5 or less innings and gave up 5 or more runs during the 2016 season.  That would be about 14% of all starts made by all pitchers or basically one of the battery mates in 28% of all games..  Just a perspective that these things happen.

If he's still sporting a 7+ ERA in early June and Asher/Aquino are doing better, then hell yes Gausman should go to the pen for a while.  Or the DL, if it's injury related.  Chances are he'll recover, but two horrible months in a row would be something more than mere chance or a slump.

I'm pretty sure they aren't to anyone's liking. Potential is a great thing, but until it's realized its just a word. If he continues to get bombed like he has, then yes, I'd love to move him to the pen. How long do you trot a guy with a 7+ ERA out there if he doesn't improve because he has "potential"?

Gausman doesn't have enough of a track record for me to automatically say it's just a rough patch.  I think he'll be ok, but if Gausman wants to be consider a TOR starter May needs to be a bounce back month.
