Hunter and Bordick could read me the script to die hard and I'd still fall asleep

Imagine the asides they would pepper that with.

Hunter: "McClane squeezes off a couple shots... they hit Heinrich in the chest... AND THAT GUY IS DEAD! Out of here! And with that fatality, McClane now has a two-man kill streak."

Bordick: "We should also talk about Nakatomi Plaza, gettin' it done as the fourth-tallest fictional skyscraper. Here we see the Maryland Live! Casino leaderboards, with the Glass Tower from The Towering Inferno coming in at number one; the Tyrell Corporation headquarters of Blade Runner at number two; OCP Tower from Robocop at number three; then Nakatomi coming in fourth at 31 stories; and finally Stark Tower from The Avengers at number five."

Demper is the king of hyperbole (perhaps that's a bit of hyperbole itself, but it's hard to argue).

Definitely not hyperbole in the slightest, that.

(Nice post, by the way!)

I wish I could rep up more than once! This is spot on!

Bordick is the worst. I find Hunter annoying, but I can handle Hunter a lot better than Bordick. I loosely follow a couple of other teams and to be fair most of the broadcast teams for local sports networks are pretty blah.

I had to log-in just to rep this post.  That mock Hunter quote is still making me laugh because of how I can hear him saying it.

Announcers definitely impact how much I enjoy a game, but I'll take Hunter and Bordick announcing a win over Thorne and Palmer announcing a loss any day.

I was at the game in which the Orioles blew a 9-1 lead, and lost the the Yankees by a score of 14-11.

If I had been watching that game on television at home, they could have brought Chuck Thompson back to life for 24 hours to announce that game, and it would have been just as painful as it was watching it from the stands.

For myself, winning is winning, and losing is losing. Everything else is incidental.

I read this all in their voices. I'm crying I'm laughing so hard.

In the first place, I don't think anyone should be allowed to use the word 'treacle' on this board. 9_9

Hey, I only know the word treacle because of Spinal Tap, so that's good enough for me.   Enjoy.

I don't care who you are, that's funny right there! I remember turning on the first spring game of the year and hearing Hunter talk about Chris Lee. He said you could tell how great a season he had the year before in Bowie because he was 5 and 0. I mean seriously, he pointed out a minor league win loss record as proof of his greatness. Can't make that stuff up.

I think Joe angel then muttered something about wishing Fred was still there and then they moved on with the game. ;)

Palmer and Thorne are great and I much prefer them to Bordick and Hunter, but I have to say I have never noticed a play-by-play announcer miss so many of the little things of baseball as Thorne does.  For example, Thorne seems to misidentify at least one pitch per at-bat.  There must be some sort of "yes and" code for broadcasting, because Palmer almost never corrects him.

I think Thorne is a hockey guy originally, so that probably explains it.

I could deal with Bordick if he just stopped saying "The Crusher"

"The Crusher" and "punch outs" drive me insane.

I listened to some of the game on Sunday on the radio and I was pleased to hear Fred Manfra for one of the last times. He isn't a great (or even good) PBP guy but the affection that he and Angel have for each other is palpable and it really is a joy to hear them call a game together. I don't really care for anybody else on the radio other than Angel. I know some people are Ben McDonald fans, and I appreciate his color insights but his voice isn't great for play-by-play and the O's radio guys switch off innings for play-by-play, so that matters.

If anybody has any insight into what games Manfra will be calling for the rest of the season, I would be interested. I assume mostly Sunday home games, but would appreciate confirmation.

Levine wasn't a great announcer in his year with the team (1991), but as a 20-year-old myself back then I thought it was pretty cool having an announcer who had written numerous episodes for M*A*S*H, Cheers and The Simpsons.

He wrote a fairly amusing book about the experience.  https://www.amazon.com/Its-Gone-No-Wait-Minute/dp/0517144174

He told two great stories about minor league announcers who had developed their own signature home run calls.   One guy had the signature call "Elvis has left the building!"    One night he misjudged a fly ball and called "Elvis has -- smacked off the wall!"    Another guy used to call "Touch 'em all, Mr. [insert player's last name here]!"    Then one day he blanked on a player's name and said, "Touch 'em all, Mr..........Baseball Man!"
