Thoughts about David Hess in 2019?

From what I’ve seen, Hess does not exhibit the command that Gonzalez had.

Also, looking at Gonzalez' minor league career through 2011 I'd assume he had about a 10% chance of having a major league career of any significance.  He only played winter ball in 2008-09 at 24 and 25, and at 26 he was in the Carolina League with a 4.54 ERA.  That kind of performance sends you to indy ball more often than the majors.

If Hess is Gonzalez with less command he faces very long odds.

He looked like a different guy today, the velocity was up and the feel for the change was improved, but the big change for me was the fastball command, he was able to move it around and that was never really his game.

Bordick mentioned that he made some adjustments to stay behind the ball and get backspin on the fastball instead of naturally cutting it. I've heard anecdotally that sometimes when guys learn to pronate earlier and stay behind the ball, they have also noticed an increased ability to command the baseball because of the more consistent and predictable spin axis of the baseball. Hopefully that's what is happening here.

I was thinking the 2019 Dwight Smith Jr. could be like the 1989 Mike Devereaux. And the 2019 Rio Ruiz like the  1989 Craig Worthington. Could the 2019 David Hess be like the 1989 Bob Milacki? I tried to connect 2019 John Means with 1989 Jeff Ballard but I'm reaching. The kind of idiotic mental exercise that's only possible in the first week of a season.
