The most strikeouts Cal had in a season was 97 in his 1983 MVP year with 726 PAs and an OPS+ of 144 (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ripkeca01.shtml ).  Davis has blown past that 97 strikeout mark in 6 of his 8 seasons here, including 4 where he more than doubled Cal.   In his Orioles career, Davis has strikeouts every 3.09 PAs, compared to 9.87 for Cal.

Look at how the Deadspin tweet is phrased.  I don't think that's by accident.  They're placing the responsibility for acting on the Orioles and I'm not sure they're wrong.

Davis would have to retire, and then it would still probably cause the MLBPA to form an investigation and could hurt Davis' future in any MLB-related role would he desire one.  Even upon retirement, any money he agreed to defer would still be due to him I believe.  And I'm going to be brutally honest, self-respect or not, that's $100 million-plus still left on the table.  Davis would be foolish to retire and not force a release.  His children's children's children could be set for life if that money is managed appropriately.  A person can't just walk away from that. 

Davis and his kids are already "set for life", I suppose, depending on what type of lifestyle they want to lead.  There's no fortune that can't be squandered. 

The MLBPA can't do anything about Davis retiring and leaving money on the table.

      Yeah I was offered a free ticket and passed. Just no desire by the way they have playing and boy did I make the right call.

      I would hope the ownership is going to spend some money on some pitching of some kind and put money into hitters that have a game plan and not just free swinging.

      You didn't mention Eflin coming back. Eflin Grayson Kremer Povich plus Young, McDermott, Rogers, and Suarez... That's really a decent group with depth. I'd love another SP but I have a feeling Eflin is our Burnes replacement.  The current bullpen plus Bautista would be pretty strong. If Bautista isn't right, then trade for someone else.  I think the big need is a matchup proof MOO bat. Preferably RHB who gets on base more and strikes out less than Mountcastle. I wonder how many years Christian Walker is looking for? He's no Soto but I think he'd be a better version of Mountcastle (.804, .830, .803 vs .729, .779, .733). Better than Mountcastle defensively as well (13 vs 2 OAA). At 34, we can probably get him for 2-3 years.  Let Santander walk and replace him with Kjerstad and Mayo platoon, maybe with Slater or another RHB in that role.  We should not assume that Mayo and Holliday are going to be productive. Hope for the best but plan for the worst. We need to get used to the idea that prospects have risk and don't always pan out the way Gunnar and Adley did.

      There are plenty of legit questions and things to address. Gunnar’s playoff performance is not one of them. He had two bad games on a big stage. Happens even to clutch guys. That’s why you have teammates. This was a collective offensive failure. I’ll give Mullins the one pass  I want Gunnar to focus on fixing his throwing motion and cutting down the unforced fielding errors.
