DL Hall 2019

I was pretty adamant about not moving Grayson R. above Hall in the prospect rankings. The level does make a difference, and Hall's raw stuff is really powerful and left handed. However, the continued command issues Hall is having, combined with Grayson's overall excellent profile, is beginning to change my mind. Where they're ranked in 2019 won't matter in the long run, but right now I think Hall probably slips to #3 in our system.

There seems to be a lot of reliever risk for Hall.

I'd still put him at no. 2 behind GrayRod.

Regarding the Carolina League, Alex Wells walk total went way up as well.  He hardly walked anyone at Delmarva. A ridiculous 10 BB's in 140 innings.  He allowed 33 in 135 innings last year (still pretty good) in Frederick.

Frederick is the big test for pitchers IMO.  Bowie is the test for hitters.  That's why I would be more aggressive in promoting some of the AA pitchers like Lowther, Zimmerman, even Wells who is a bit younger to Norfolk.

Hall threw 5 innings in his first start after the all star break, allowing two earned runs on one hit, two walks and an HBP.    All of that came in a 23-pitch first inning, in which he also made a throwing error on a pick off throw.    After the first inning, he retired 12 in a row on 47 pitches.

Luke, Tony, someone who knows more about pitcher development...

Hall isn’t showing Tanner Scott or Ofelky Peralta levels of wildness, but he will need to improve to reach his potential.

In Hall’s case, has it been an issue with repeating his delivery? Finding a release point? Both? Neither? Just wondering what Elias’ player development staff is going to be working on with Hall. Clearly the stuff is there.

I will begin with saying I haven't actually seen any of the recent wild outtings and I am also no pitching guru.  However, wouldn't it make more sense that he is working on some things causing him to walk more guys than all of a sudden becoming extremely wild?

That’s a fair point.   I can’t speak to whether the wildness comes from something he’s working on.     But it concerns me.

Looks like last year he was at 4BB/9 this year that is up to 7BB/9, just seems strange it would jump this year unless he is working on something.  I am sure someone else here could provide a much better explanation.

You can start with the fact that Carolina League hitters are simply more selective than Sally League hitters.   Examples:

Wells: O.6 BB/9 vs. 2.2

Knight: 1.4 vs. 5.0

Baumann: 3.1 vs. 3.9

Bishop: 1.4 vs. 5.2

Lowther was a glaring exception, 2.6 vs. 2.5.

That is certainly a good point and hard to argue with.  Hopefully Hall gains some more command, he is still has youth on his side.

BTW, does anyone have a good read on his height? I know he's officially listed as 6' 2, but I've also seen it as 6' even and 6' 1. Naturally young men often grow an inch or more beyond 18, so if he was 6' two years ago, he very well may have grown since.  Anyway, I was hoping someone knows him or has been close enough to judge it. Thanks.
