Nashville Orioles???

Camden Yards lease up 2021. John Angelos and his wife have a house there.

I've heard this rumor last year once Peter Angelos was no longer running things. Let's hope some local ownership will step up and keep the Orioles in Baltimore. With all the negative surrounding this city, losing the Orioles would be huge.

IF MLB were to ever leave Camden Yards without a team, I'm done with the game.   Period.

That said, all the rumors we've heard is that MLB would rather be done with the Angelos family.  I have very strong doubts they'd allow them to move the team to Nashville.

Sounds more like some gamesmanship from the Angelos family to either pressure the city to make the lease relationship even more team friendly in 2021... or to spur interest from potential local buyers.

As to Nashville, from a strictly business sense... Baseball America did a cursory analysis of the city for potential expansion awhile back. Certainly didn’t seem like a hot spot. Link below.

Attendance began serious fall-off when major league baseball brought a team back to Washington. This drained off patrons from the D.C. suburbs who had made the Orioles their “home” team in the years when Washington had no team.

Since the Nationals started playing, in 2005, Orioles’ attendance has steadily slipped. Of 15 American League teams, the Orioles rank 14th in attendance.

This is lazy writing and has been debunked here numerous times.  Check the attendance records and get back to us.  Attendance was slipping several years before 2005.  33.8% drop from 1997 to 2003 seems "serious" to me.
Pre-Nationals

1997    3,711,132    0
1998    3,684,650    -26,482
1999    3,433,150    -277,982
2000    3,297,031    -414,101
2001    3,094,841    -616,291
2002    2,682,439    -1,028,693
2003    2,454,523    -1,256,609
2004    2,744,018    -967,114

I'm not saying the Nationals had zero effect, but you also have to consider the W/L record and 14 straight years of losing.

This would be beyond horrible.   But it seems extraordinarily unlikely, if for no reason other than that baseball has had only 1 relocation in the last 47 years and that was the move of the Expos to Washington in 2005.  Which was a very special situation.   If the sons or wife want to sell, there will be a local buyer I hope.

I have a hard time seeing Baltimore being without a baseball team for long if the Orioles end up moving. Stuart Sternberg would move the Rays to Baltimore in a heartbeat if Camden Yards became available. Imagine having the Rays front office here in Baltimore with a much bigger payroll to work with at their disposal.

Still....one would think that there would likely be a lot of litigation given how much Maryland has invested in Camden Yards if they just up and left.

The city of Nashville will also have to publically finance a new stadium and I have a hard time seeing that happening. And if Nashville does use public funds to build a new stadium, why not go after the Rays or A's instead of the Orioles? Those two teams have far superior front offices and have had a lot more success over the past 10-15 years than the Orioles have. I'm sure Sternberg would be more than happy to move the Rays to Nashville if they gave him a new stadium.

I agree with this! It almost literally takes an act of the Almighty to get MLB to approve a team moving to another city.

All we need is a good sustained pipeline of talent and O's fans will be back in droves. Just need some exciting players with a little knack for clutch plays.

i think it would end up being the Las Vegas Orioles (or some other name) and MLB will just try to forget that Mr. Angelos ever existed.

Actually I have worried this for a while.

Attendance isn’t exactly soaring, and the city’s “safety” has become a national punchline.

The Chris Davis albatross isn’t helping, either...

MLB would probably like a scenario in which the O's move for 2022 and get replaced in 2027 by the Rays (their lease ends in 2026), because it would end the MASN problem.

I'd prefer them to sell to new owners who have no desire to move the team, regardless of where those owners live. But if the team is moved, Baltimore should negotiate for rights to retain the name Orioles so we don't have another Colts debacle.

What? This is an article about the Orioles potentially moving. How is this misinformation? The giant question marks provide the questioning portion to start the discussion. Feel free to ignore if this is too much for you.

Anyone who has spent more than 5 seconds researching the situation in Nashville knows that it's not happening. Posting an article that says it could happen because ONE of the Angelos' sons have a house in Nashville is, yes, irresponsible.

    • Some time in the 2010's, I heard Sam Miller on Effectively Wild guess by 2050 starting and relieving as baseball has known them would mostly go extinct save for perhaps the best 20-30 talents (maybe think Kyle Bradish on up these days). Living through it, we'll get to see our Orioles contribute a verse as they scientifically curate the careers of Grayson Rodriguez, Chayce McDermott, Luis De Leon and others. Cade Povich with a strong assortment of benders and not a huge fastball for me is trending towards the Kyle Gibson way of leading his team in regular season innings pitched and being a marginal Start/Sit if his team makes the postseason. With good fortune by the end of 2026 Cade Povich will be almost as prominent an MLBPA member as Grayson Rodriguez as the players collaborate on negotiating priorities.    Like say maybe...the club's current opportunity to make a pitcher's 6.000 years of team control take up 7-8 years of their baseball lives in the best case scenario because they "aren't built up" to be Roy Halladay.
    • A lot of guys on that list have also just had a very hard time staying healthy.  Haskin has done some good things but missed a lot of time.  Servideo missed a lot of time.  Ardoin actually has had a decent career so far for a 4th rounder. Reed Trimble is another guy that just can't stay on the field.  Looks like he made it about 2 weeks this year before going on the IL yet again.  Not sure what the injury is (yes RZ I did google it :))
    • Have you ever seen them in the same room together…?
    • What a bummer, especially means. Glad we got to see some vintage Means in his first start back. I'd love to bring him back on a two year deal
    • What he's been able to do at the plate has been a nice pick-me-up for the a team that has had multiple hitters struggling at the same time. For me though, watching how he's handled 2B this season has been a treat. The tag on the SB attempt last night was a play that not all 2B make.    There's been times I would have traded or released him for nothing, but right now I'm really glad he's still here.
    • If he stays right where he is right now hitting .245, he has very nice value. On pace for a 3-4 war season. As a secondary piece, that’s huge.
    • Adding relievers should be the priority, but that doesn't mean Elias won't look to strengthen our staff or add a hitter as well.  I'm not expecting us to trade for Luzardo, but it's a possibility with the injuries that our staff has been through.
