Just in time, the AFL season starts today.    As a reminder, this year the O’s players are on the Surprise Saguaros, and include:

Rylan Bannon

Cody Carroll

Dean Kremer 

David Lebron 

Mason McCoy

Alex Wells 

With Austin Hays joining once the major league season ends.   Kyle Moore (Delmarva’s manager) is serving as one of the coaches.

The regular season runs through October 25.    I’m looking forward to having some more box scores to read!

It seems in the Villar trade value thread the board's sense is a tender is a certainty, but I wonder if Bannon remains scorching as he was at AAA if that could impact the decision at all.

I've been totally fine with keeping all the best hitters down this year because there's time to get everyone who matters 1000 PA's in the show to acclimate for 2022.  But the window for those 1000 PA's starts next May.  I'm not sure if Bannon is one of those guys or not, but if he stays good through AFL, Spring, AAA in April I'll get itchy to see how his game translates.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Bannon does in the AFL and next year.    Personally, I’m not in that big of a rush for him to reach the majors.   He’s only had 90 AAA at bats over 20 games.    If he continues hitting well, an ETA of the 2020 all star break works well for me.

Best overall group the O's have sent in years.  Usually it's more suspects than prospects.  I follow the minors fairly closely, but often there's guys the O's send who I have no idea who they are.

Looks like the AFL is playing more night games this year, probably because the season is earlier and it’s still quite hot during the day.    

In yesterday’s opener, the only Orioles prospect to see game action was Cody Carroll, who pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed a run on a hit and two walks.   Pitching the 9th and in line for the easy 3-run save, he coughed up a leadoff homer, struck out the next two hitters, then walked two batters and got yanked.   His replacement got the third out and the save.    

On a random note, the Saguaros have a Kremer and a Bremer.    The latter starts tonight’s game.

Makes sense to have more evening games with the season starting three weeks earlier.

A little disappointed that neither Bannon nor McCoy were in the lineup for game 1.

Me too, but I’m sure they’ll get plenty of playing time.   The Saguaros are carrying 5 players capable of playing 2B, SS or 3B.

And yet, McCoy and Bannon rode the bench for the second straight day.   The only Orioles “prospect” who got into Game 2 was David Lebron, who pitched in relief and was torched for 4 earned runs on 6 hits in 1.2 IP.

At least Dean Kremer is listed as tonight’s starter for the Saguaros.

Kremer and Wells had almost identical lines: 2 shutout innings each, allowing 2 hits without a walk.    Kremer struck out 3, Wells 4.

Meanwhile Bannon, playing 3B, went 2 for 4 with a run scored.   McCoy, playing 2B, went 1 for 4 with a double.    He also reached on an error.   

Luis Garcia, Nats’ prospect who played a full year of AA at 19 this season, had played SS all three games for the Saguaros.   He’s a top 100 prospect and it seems like he’s going to get a lot of playing time despite the surplus of infielders on the roster.

      No. Better yet ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!  We do we need to take on anything associated with him or take on that kind of pr hit and risk? I hope he gets a shot at redemption … somewhere else. Why can’t we just acquire/trade for a current MLB pitcher who is already good and doesn’t come with baggage? Is that too much to ask?

      My big issue with him besides the zero defensive value is he's batting .227 and has only 5 doubles which tells me he's probably a mistake hitter. That's a big red flag for me as well when I look at stats, especially lower level guys. Guys with decent home run numbers and low 2B numbers typically are guys who feast on those middle-middle pitches, but are not making consistent hard contact to get those 2B numbers up. Now I'm going off memory here and haven't really watched him a ton this year running, but he's pretty dang slow from what I remember. So now we have a short, slow, 1B/DH who has some ability to make decent swing decisions on Low-A hitters, but hits for a low average and doesn't show a lot of extra base power. So is he a guy that you perhaps follow to see if he's a guy that develops more game power and allows his bat to carry him up the chain? Perhaps. But I just don't know what he would be in the majors besides a right-handed DH if he develops more power. How many are those are now in the game? I mean, perhaps his absolute upside is a Yermín Mercedes type, but I imagine if he is a late bloomer guy who suddenly starts to rake at the upper levels, it will probably be for his 2nd or 3rd organization as those guys typically bounce around.

      Thanks for sharing all of the formula / data prospect trackers, I don’t have the patience to follow them on Twitter so I appreciate the updates here. I do put value in that when projecting offense and they do have data that we don’t have.  RZNJ and Tony have a good point that the robo scout types are generally not going to consider defense (at least not fully), and as everyone knows that’s a massive difference in value for C v. 1B/DH. So for Mordan I’d only really put weight on the robo scout if it said he was a good prospect even as solely a 1B, and I’m guessing he’s not.  I am curious to track development of C like Willems and Mordan because I think any C in the system behind Basallo are prime trade chips. If Mordan has good offensive data but bad defense, seems like a nice guy to try to sell another team on at the trade deadline.

      I am curious to see what happens with the Astros and Verlander.  Looks like they may be heating up making it irrelevant but if they end up being a seller and he shows he is healthy before the deadline I think Verlander is the guy Elias targets.  I think with our new ownership and low payroll no reason we cannot take on the remainder of that contract and he could be the perfect replacement for Bradish.
