I almost down voted this post, but I'm sure you know what you're doing. Mays being a better CF (if true), does not mean he's better all around. It means he's better at CF, but still not quite as valuable overall by the only objective measures that exist today*.

Of course, WAR could be wrong, but that's another discussion.

*only measure that I've seen being applied is WAR. Maybe there are others favoring Mays, IDK. He was clearly a great player, but so is Trout.

I assumed by "all around" he meant something like "among the best ever at all of hitting, hitting for power, running, throwing, fielding, etc."  You could argue Trout hasn't been an elite runner since his early 20s and isn't the best CFer in the world, just pretty good.  Since Mays wasn't captured by modern tools like Statcast you could substitute subjective stories of his greatness and just assume he was better at some of those things.

And if you wanted to compare now, you could toss out any version of WAR that has a defensive component. Trout would fare well.

It's a mark of an inner circle HOFer when the argument against him is "Hey, there were some guys having career years who were just about as good.  In his 6th-best season."

I agree. I think Corn was talking this time slice.

Since all objective evidence about defense is misleading and contrived I'm going to continue to assume that Pete Stanicek was the greatest CFer ever.  Also, greatest second baseman.

All the current data. I believe that there is an excellent level of evaluation of defense and it will soon be translated to the composite. valuations.
