Are we witnessing the death of the Orioles?

When Giants stadium was built NYC was in pretty bad condition.  Tons of crime and talk of the city going bankrupt.  It isn't the NYC you see today.

DC was in worse shape then we are now.  Crack smoking mayor.  Tons of crime.  Highest murder rate in the country with under reporting of murders.  Georgetown fought a metro stop as they didn't want all the crime hitting the one part of the city with low crime.

Wait... you mean to say there is crime in major cities?  Who'd have think it?

2012-2017 showed that the region can thrive with two teams in playoff contention, and/or in the postseason itself.  2005-2017 both teams were either bad, or both were good, there was no demonstrable instance where the Nationals were good and the Orioles were bad.  Are we in that phase now,  yes, but how long that will last remains to be seen because the Orioles are a work in progress and the Nationals are going to have a lot of tough decisions to make on their own guys, Rendon specifically.  People need to stop acting like the Nationals success, or mere existence, is a death sentence for the Orioles.  The region can survive with two teams in it; I'm honestly just not sure that some Orioles can, or want to.

You have a very weak argument. And you are using a bad argument technique.   DC doesn't have the crime it had back in the 80's.  I have been to US major cities like Boston and San Antonio and San Francisco that have relatively low crime rates.  Of course nothing like the super low crime rate in  most European cities.

DC used to have the highest murder rate in the country. Now it isn't even a 1/3rd of Baltimore's murder rate.   Baltimore has over 9 times the murder rate of San Fransisco. Baltimore's murder rate is hundreds of times higher than Lisbon.

Should have known better than engage you.  You asserted that sports teams playing in suburban arenas was somehow an indication of a dying city.  Ridiculous.  Now, all other words you choose to type will be ignored, as they should have been from the beginning.  Have a nice day.

For reasons totally unrelated to how Baltimore is.

Rumors about Oakland moving have been in place for decades, trust me, I have family in the bay area.

This why I don't buy into the Orioles are going to move in the next 5-10 years. The A's play in the worst stadium by far in MLB and have to deal with things like raw sewage leaks. They still aren't any closer to relocating than 10 years ago.

OPACY is one of the best parks in baseball. Make the Orioles winners and the attendance will go up.

This is exactly right, and that’s where the money lives in the DMV.

Certainly more wealth, but its not like there isn't enough money to fund the Orioles in Baltimore. The Baltimore-Columbia-Towson area has 2.8M people - that's more than Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Cleveland, and Milwaukee. That's pretty comparable to Denver's 2.9M and St. Louis' 2.8M.

If anything, the O's have proven they've been able to outspend and have larger payrolls than teams with much bigger markets: Miami, Tampa Bay, Minneapolis, San Diego.

Even with the raw sewage issues, some say the Trop in Tampa is still a worse stadium. We have had that very discussion in OH before.

Baltimore is not going anywhere, I dont care what the kool-aid drinkers say.

They are entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't mean there is any validity in it.

I agree on that. I've never been to Oakland, but I like the atmosphere of the A's stadium. The Rays plays in a warehouse.

I do not think we are seeing the death of the Orioles.  However, watching the Astros/Yankees series, it is PAINFULLY clear of the gap between the playoff teams and the current Orioles.  I do not know how or how long it would take to close that gap and be on a par with those teams.  Just counting on the # 1 or first round draft choice each year is not going to do it, at least not in my lifetime.

    • It’s O’s and Yanks. Good guys versus bad guys. Baby Birds up against the Evil Empire — and another trip to the post-season is in the cards. I’ve been cheering for the O’s and very specifically against the Yanks going on six decades, and I’m getting good at it. So, yeah. I’m fired up. Now ask me about hopes and dreams. I don’t think this Orioles team is going to make a run to WS this year.  They have scuffled, they have failed — but I’m reminded, even in the platinum age of data — baseball is still a game of failure.  And man, runners in scoring position over the last week, I’m not sure I want to know that number. They’re still my guys. As long as they’re in it, so am I.
    • Let's go Tampa! Actually, I'm fired up for the offseason.
    • Not fired up, per se, but engaged in the ramp-up to playoff baseball. On one hand, it's like the spring training phase of gearing up for playoffs. On the other hand, it's like the playoffs have already begun. We're qualified for round 1, which consists of the next 6 games. Even watching the other teams play now is entertaining, as they jostle for entry to the next round.
    • I really think that Westburg is the difference maker for us. I don't know why, but the offense just doesn't run right without him... like an engine that needs a tune up. I'm glad he's back with a week to go in the regular season.
    • Don't be too hard on yourself OP. We've all been there. For me, I usually hit a frustration point mid-late season and then start to just accept things. Baseball is a very weird, very inscrutable game sometimes. I've driven myself a bit nuts this season with the Adley thing because it's one of those baseball things that just doesn't make a lot of sense. Same with the pitching injuries.  Each season is a little narrative. This one will be the year we had a bunch of injuries, the year of the RISP regression, the year of the rookie struggles, the year of the questionable Elias trades, the year we couldn't follow up on the 100-win season, etc. And yet - it will be a playoff year. And that's the only goal of every regular season: make the playoffs. Hopefully our playoff narrative will change this time around.
    • I’m fired up for sure. We are finally full strength offensively and this stretch of games will be a great way for this team to gel down the stretch. The AL East is still attainable so let’s kick ass from here and see where we land!
    • Westburg is back. Everything is fine now. Enjoy the championship run.
