I know everyone is "in" on Akin enough to put him on their prospect lists, but am I wrong for thinking he's more of a Brad Bergesen type player?

i.e. Not really a prospect but getting himself to the majors anyway, and ultimately everyone concludes that his stuff just doesn't play at that level and he goes to Japan after 1.5 years of putting up average to below average starts for the O's?

Because that's where I am.

I've watched Akin up close. Many times. I don't think he is Brad Bergesen.  He may end up flopping all together, but he probably can pitch at the major league level. I doubt he need to go to Japan.

Putting Hays on my prospect list doesn't add value to the list. He’s an everyday player for the Orioles. Fantasizing over his future worth is pointless because the future is here.

But he qualifies, a list should include all qualified players.

I'm also not at all certain that Hays has established himself as an everyday player just yet.

What about him makes you think that?

The narrative I remember about Bergesen was that he wasn’t really a prospect until you couldn’t ignore that he was the next man up. The Orioles back then were starved for any guy who get outs... and there was Brad Bergesen— hanging out in the Inty league getting outs. Why not him? He wasn’t the cutest girl at the bar, just the only girl at the bar.

I feel that way about Akin— I don’t think his stuff is amazing, but for right now, he’s the next man up. The Orioles are going home with him at the end of the night, and it’s only because these other cats are still in Bowie at best.

Thats my unscientific gut feel. You’ll get one fun season out of Akin and he’ll be in Japan in five years.

I also don't really see anything to be excited about with Akin. He feels like a journeyman type to me, which, sure, we could definitely use. But I don't really see him carving out a nice career in the bigs. But we'll see!

I look forward to the write-up on Akin. My uninformed opinion is he could be anything from a fringe #3/4 guy if it comes together to a AAAA type. I do think he has some minor fitness issues, which I assume eventually he'll get under control.

For this org, he's been a bulldog for the last 2 years at least. By that, I mean a guy who fights on the mound and gets through innings/doesn't miss a ton of starts. He's not an elite arm, but might have a make-up that improves his odds. It's also worth remembering that his stats this year should be compared to other AAA stats from this year. He was toward the top of the league in several, even though they weren't impressive. Norfolk in 2019 was a pretty extreme hitting environment.

None of this means he'll have ML success. I think your doubts are probably shared by many to varying degrees, but I also don't think he's a profile without a chance to stick.

I think Akin was willing to work on the things that the new folks wanted to see last year.  I bet he gets a real shot.

    • If you’d rather have Trumbo under any circumstances, well then. God only knows how many extra runs scored because he let a ball fall in front of him, but it was a lot. An out at the plate is only an out, and it may or may not come with RISP, but a missed catch in the OF gives the offense another chance, extends the inning, puts more pressure on the pitcher.  Mullins saved a lot of runs with his defense and speed even when he wasn’t hitting. im not talking about errors, nor am I talking about routine fly balls, but about the extra inches a good defender gets that make the difference between a catch and a non- catch, and that’s important. And no one knows before the game what will be required of the defender. nine guys come to the plate, and if one of them is in the lineup not for his offense, but for what he offers with the glove, that’s fine. The other eight should cover for him. Thats why Kevin Pillar had a successful career.
    • Not sure why you bothered to quote me. I was helping another poster figure out how not important a left fielder is when it comes to defense in the modern game. You don't start a left fielder for defense.
    • Were we on Sunday Night Baseball that Sunday 9/17?    My Google of Rosh Hashanah 2023 said it ended at sundown the Sunday. I'm not Jewish either but I am baseball, and in childhood the Sandy Koufax stories I remembered most were about Yom Kippur. The Google also reminded me Kremer's turn as Texas finished the sweep was just 2 days after October 7th. Let's get a sweep, guys.
    • I don’t care what Slater did before he came to us this season. Just like I didn’t care what Hicks did before he came to us last year.  Since we acquired Slater he has a .707 OPS vs LHP and Cowser has a .500 OPS vs LHP.  It’s a coin flip. If we stick to what we’ve done, then it will be Slater. He hasn’t not started versus a LH SP since we acquired him.  I’m good with him or Cowser. Mullins is a lock. If I had to bet I’d think the lineup will be, 1. Gunnar SS L 2. Westburg 2B R 3. Santa RF S 4. Mounty 1B R 5. Adley DH S 6. Slater LF R 7. Urias 3B R 8. Mullins CF L 9. McCann C R
    • So he pitched on it last season?
    • Without Looking - Do you know who was second in Innings Pitched?  Pretty incredible.
    • Looks like it began on Friday, Sep 15 and ended on Sunday, Sep 17.
