On the other hand, with a guy like Diaz not playing in the Majors you also burn a year of development. I’d rather he and Mountcastle get plenty of burn instead of an extra year 7 years from now.

The flip side to that is it’s only ~60 games, rather than 100 or 162. I’d rather be come up later for say 30 games.

My answer to the thread's question is "Nobody", because I'm sensing that there will be no baseball in 2020. Partly due to Covid-19 risk, but mostly because the owners and players will never get their act together.

Who is on first, What is on second and Nobody is in left field.

The full season was going to be about developing and evaluating talent, not winning games. I think a short season would be the same, though far less useful. So the root beer guy, Stewart. Not enough ABs available to justify bringing up Mountcastle unless he's going to get significant time elsewhere or we have some pandopenings.

You want to develop and evaluate talent while at the same time not bringing up a guy that played the whole season at AAA last year.

I'd sure bring him up and start him for a 162-game season. Or a 100-game season. Or even a 70-game or probably a 60-game season. But in 40-some games, which I think is going to be the only alternative to 0 games, having Stewart and Mountcastle share LF, with Smith also getting time there, isn't going to tell us much about either.

As I said, if there's a commitment to giving Mountcastle lots of time elsewhere (1B and DH), so he's playing pretty much full-time for 40  games, that would be different.

Of course, the Orioles could have a much longer season if they make a deep post-season run.

@VaBird1  offered an excellent solution. Put Mountcastle at first. I don’t see any immediate problem with that solution. Plus, we need to see if he can handle first anyway. Not because he would not be an acceptable leftfielder, but because we are collecting outfielders, And One of them will probably push Mountcastle out of left field within a year or so.

Realistically (if there is a season) I think they’ll stick with Davis unfortunately. I’m thinking Davis plays most days at 1B and Nunez at DH. Possibly Nunez gets time at 3B and that could open up some DH at bats for Mountcastle.

I wish someone would teach Mountcastle 2B. If Pearce can do it then why not Mountcastle? He played some SS and 3B so it shouldn’t be terribly different. But considering I’m a nobody and the professionals haven’t tried it then I’m sure there’s a good reason. Still...that’d be awesome.

I trust the MiLB/MLB coaches and FO (past and present) enough, but I still don’t get why 2B was a no go for Mountcastle. If the arm was the problem, not lateral movement or general athleticism, then why couldn’t he be a bat over glove 2B at least?

I think @Tony-OHsaid the problem was his footwork. The team wasn’t emphasizing defense, but Hopefully that will change and we can find some place for him to play where he won’t be hopeless.

His arm action would be absolutely awful at turning double plays.

Ok my bad. His “armwork” is lousy.

And now that I have once again slammed MC’s D, CoC is going to lambast me again....oh well.

CoC just doesn't think Mountcastle's bat will play due to his K-BB ratio. I believe his ability to hit for average and to hit balls hard just out of the zone will offset his aggressive approach, but he may struggle at first and the Orioles may have to be willing to live with an adjustment phase.

I haven't said that.

I'm eager to see what he can do.

    • And McCann is our worst RHB facing a dominant lefty with reverse splits. You have to think a K is a high likelihood.  And then to send him up there with Ramon on 3rd, you have to expect the same outcome.
    • I don't like hearing that a catcher has a back issue -no matter how big or how small it is- at age 26.
    • IMO he made two decisions that were clearly wrong, pitching to Witt and not PR Holliday, to go along with a couple others I didn’t agree with but are certainly debatable. There is no doubt that the game was lost because the bats couldn’t push a run across, but everyone has a job to do, and like the batters, Hyde didn’t do his.
    • I use the StatCast search function. It’s a little more complicated for chase rate, ground ball rate, popup rate, and sweet spot rate because you need to adjust selected pitch attributes/outcomes as well as total pitch definition and then use % of pitches. I believe popups are categorized by stringers and generally capture balls that an infielder could catch.  I believe Adley’s fly balls have gotten can of cornier even without the popups.
    • ...or simply choose not to even attempt to play situational baseball.  As I posted in another thread, 0-0 game both teams aces are dealing.  Ced leads off the inning with a double.  Your #9 hitter (McCann) is coming to the plate with your two best hitters (Gunnar and Westburg) to follow. Instead of bunting Ced to 3rd and almost assuring yourself a 1-0 lead which firmly puts the pressure on KC, Hyde chooses to let McCann swing away.  He feebly strikes out, Gunnar grounds out (there was your run), and Westburg flies out.  0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors. 1 left on....
    • Adley - Is it an injury? Is it a woman? Is it the "process?" Is it just who he is at his age? What Is It? And no, I'm not doing a pole. Wait till 2025 for the answer - I think. Till then - speculate. This off season goin be fun on here. This thread kinda makes me miss Rick Dempsey and I have absolutely no idea why. 😄 Oh yea, he was our last WSMVP.
