How long will DJ Stewart be able to hold off Ryan Mountcastle?

WAR S’more! The guy needs to figure out how to have an above .300 OBP at minimum. Honestly .330 + would be ideal. He was obviously rushed due to the rule 5 selection. And as was previously mentioned, outside of a very hot streak avg/OBP his numbers were poor.

i Don’t think you play him because his defense is better than the guys you mention. You get no gold stars for being better defensively than Trumbo, Smith Jr, or Trey.

It doesn’t take much to have better defense than the guys that I mentioned, but I mentioned them to illustrate that his defense is much better than the guys we are currently using, but also, it’s not bad on its own, at least in the right field, he’s better than average, and that’s not nothing.

Nothing Davis has done in the last 3 years tells me he is a major league player, but he continues to get major playing time.

With Mancini out for the forseeable future, there is no reason for Santander not to be in the lineup every day.  Who should the O's put out there instead?  Smith?  Wilkerson?  Davis?

Davis is the outlier based on a bad contract. Otherwise he’s long gone.

Why? Santander has shown he can hit at the ML level. Stewart has shown nothing.

Satander has not shown he can hit at the major league level. He had a .297 OBP and struggled mightily the last month and a half of the season.  He has a small sample size where he hit but he didn't hit in Norfolk last year.  He didn't hit in Bowie in 2018.  DJ Stewart has hit at every level consistently he just hasn't gotten the time at the big leagues.

He had a 101 OPS+ over roughly half a season last year.  That is acceptable but we have other data that indicates it might not be sustainable.  I don't think he's proven himself at this juncture.

DJ Stewart has a .790 minor league OPS.  Anthony Santander has a .784. Stewart had minor league seasons with OPSes of .633, .719, and .716.  Santander is a year younger, and had his development interrupted by being a Rule 5 pick. If I had to bet on one of the two becoming a productive MLB player it would be Santander.

Santander also had a .282 OBP with regular playing time in the second half of 2019. I think it's more likely than not Santander projects as a part time player.

I think a juiced ball help Stewart more than it does Santander.  If they keep the ball happy, I think he's got the better chance.

Overall, this is a big year (or part of a year) for Stewart and Santander. Without Mancini, they both get a chance to get ABs and both need to capitalize. I want to see both of them on the field for 40+ games (provided we actually make it through the season). Mountcastle eventually takes LF, but should be given some time at DH and maybe even 1B with Davis, Nunez and others taking a seat some to find playing time.

I bucket Santander and Stewart similarly. Both have a chance to be role players, but both need to prove it before the ABs become even harder to come by with the return of Mancini, the promotion of Mountcastle, Diaz, and company.

Santander was hitting  288/323/518/841 on Sept 7th last year.  Then is went 0-21.   It was reported that he a minor injuries.
