With so many guys available, why is Hess still here? I didn’t see the game but according to Tony(paraphrasing) Hess’s fastball is straight as a string and twice as hittable.

Eh, that was the knock on Chris Tillman before he became a top five Orioles pitcher of the last 30 years.

He'll be in Bowie sometime on the next 3 days.

I missed the whole conversation but Bordick was relaying a story where Elias spoke about situational hitting, bunting and creating more runs, in spite of analytical advice.

Interested to see what form that takes, if any. Lacking reliable batters it makes sense to try something different. We saw first hand how good the Royals were at station to station baseball a few years ago.

Ok, it’s the knock on Hess now. We can stop knocking when he becomes a top-five guy. But until then, I would be very happy if someone else deserved that spot.

First, I don’t think the comparison with Tillman is apt.    His secondary stuff was way better than Hess’s and he was a much more highly regarded prospect (ranked no. 22 prospect by BA and 16 by BP).    It just took him some time to figure out how to pitch in the majors.

But second, I don’t think Hess is any less of a prospect than many of the pitchers the Orioles are carrying right now.    He probably won’t start this season in the majors, but we’ll see who performs decently over the next 2.5 months.     There’s a lot of cannon fodder to sort through.   Hess was looking pretty good in spring training and I’m not going to write off the chance that he made offseason improvements just because he had a rough outing in his first game action in four months.

I heard Bordick rambling on for a while about bunting and hitting-and-running constantly because of the short schedule, but I assumed he was just ad-libbing nonsense to fill time.  If he was repeating something from Elias he must have misunderstood, unless Elias knows that they're going to secretly be using 1914 baseballs, bats and players.

Elias never implied that the Orioles would win the  shortened season with small ball tactics. To hope for that that is a hope to return to the Gashouse Gang and guys named Rabbit on the team. Besides Stevie is broken. The dream is gone.

I believe David Hess is the perfect pitcher for the KBO.

Who is the current Oriole most likely to be called Rabbit?  Mullins?

There is no Bowie this season.

Yes there is.  It's the location of our camp for guys who are on the 60an roster but not on the major league roster.  There are already 13 guys assigned there and reporting and working out daily under the supervision of the organization.

    • From here https://www.mlb.com/orioles/stats/ops/regular-season
    • Where are you getting your stats from that's not correct looking at OPS.
    • On the O's this year, Martinez would have been: 5th in OPS 5th in AVG 6th in HRs in 120 games
    • I think PFF is grading Roquan badly because the safeties behind him are playing like ass and it's making him look bad.  If teams are going to attack him over the middle on crossing routes with WRs (like KC did with Rice) he doesn't really stand much of a chance if the safeties behind him don't throw him a bone.  He's still a huge help in the run game.   In general I think PFF assigns a little too much blame to linebackers on passes over the middle, so unless you're an elite coverage guy at LB it's really hard to grade well.  The flip side to this is that teams probably need to adjust their coverage areas to account for the fact that LBs aren't going to be able to hold down WRs for long.
    • Thanks. This tells me what my eyes have seen with Roquan. He's been a liability in coverage and the fact that Simpson is ahead of him is not good for our defensive leader. Do you have the PFF grades for offense too?
    • What you want is perfectly reasonable.  But you seem entirely to focused on money.  The team needs to work to improve.  I don't care what it costs, you shouldn't either.  They are going to spend money and payroll will be higher next year and the year after that.  We need them to make improvements and some of that is rightfully going to come from within and not cost much. The improvements that are needed are going to cost too, I'm not saying they wont.  But ownership and the GM should simply work in tandem to make sure the team has what it needs.  I am not really concerned about how much that costs because it should be able to be done without jumping this particular team into say top ten in payroll.
    • This is the right approach. the orioles should be spending more money and I believe they will, but I expect it to be measured with less risk (ie we won’t be handing out a Hader type deal or a  long term contract to Santander IMO) improving on some of the obvious weaknesses certainly makes sense.    1x SP: Burnes, Fried, Buehler 1x RH OF/DH: Martinez, O’Neill, Profar 1x 1B: (wishlist) Alonso, Walker
