Doesn’t every team have 60 players for this reason? Only 30 were with the team now. Bring up the other 30.

That's not how it works.

60 player pool = all of your "minor leagues" for 2020. From that, you still have a 40-man roster. From THAT, you have a 30-man active game roster and a 3-man taxi squad. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone know if it's too late for players to opt out? Wouldn't be surprised if some were changing their mind right now especially if they were on the fence. Of course you might just wait and see what happens since there is greater than zero possibility the season falls apart in the next week.

Sure, if they are prepared to forfeit their salary.

Did Marlins do their summer camp at their home ballpark? That thing should be shut down completely. Most likely the team brought it up to Philly. Best case scenario would be remaining players plus fill ins from the taxi squad start playing road games only in a few days? What a mess!

I’m not 100% sure, but they did play the Braves before going to Philly. The same Braves team that had 2 catchers go on the COVID IL.

IMO

I see MLB doing a 3 day shutdown of games, and going behind closed doors with the GMs and see what they can sort out.

I think that's a pretty reasonable first step. Pause everything and let everyone get their current test results, at least.

you still only have a 40 man roster.

And also the other thirty slots in the player pool isn't and was never intended to be an alternate roster. It isn't set up with the proper number of starters, relievers, outfielders, infielders, etc.

The Orioles don't even have close to 30 players actually practicing in Bowie, they have maybe 20 (including those on the taxi squad). There are 55 players in the player pool with a 30-man active roster, 3 on the IL (Tate, Harvey and Means) and 2 additional of the 55 hurt (Blach and Wilkerson).

Exactly.

I understand folks want the games to continue, but there seems to be rampant misunderstanding of how rosters work this season.

Exactly. It was set up just for injuries and 1 or 2 “virus” lists.

You would think that MLB has a contingency plan if something like this happened. They should open the book to what ever page that plan is on and proceed accordingly. There is no way they could not have a plan for something like this.

It’s Manfred.

Someone who was service time manipulated could opt out and not really lose anything. Vlad Jr. is probably making about the minimum so would only lose a few hundred grand. In just a few days he should get himself over the 1 year of service time line, whereas if he played the whole year he still would be at less than 2 years.

This is the MLB you're talking about. The contingency plan was based on if a couple people got infected on a team. There's no plan for a full blown outbreak, there never was, because there's just no good plan for that. They're rolling the dice and hoping that didn't happen.

Morgan Freeman narrative voice:  “They did not have a plan.”
