Despite his obvious over-achievement this season thus far, I'd still rather have Flaherty over Vielma, Sardinas, or anyone else we could currently have in the "utility guy" role.

I can’t really disagree with that.   It’s a pretty lame group, and now that Schoop is out, the original idea of using Valencia at 3B and shifting Beckham around to avoid the need for a real utility guy has been pretty quickly exposed as a bad idea.

Count me as thrilled for Flash.  I hope he continues it all year and never looks back. I think the O's made the right call and again happy that Flash got more money than Baltimore offered.

I tend to think he will come back to earth, but I would also count this as another opportunity to play every day that he has seized on.

Good for him.

Just imagine what it must feel like to be a Phillies fan right now.  He was in their camp through spring and they just let him get away for nothing!  What an organizational misfire!

Not sure how they'll ever recover now that they've only started the season 10-7.......... *cries*

Maybe they had someone better.  We have Vielma.  A .498 OPS in AAA.  I have no idea why we didn't sign Flaherty and I have no idea why forum members were against signing him.

Like I said it was over and over again. The problem is Buck didn't realize it was a bad idea to go without a utility infielder.  He was actually bragging about how he could give players days off now that he had all this depth.  Well he had 4 DH's.  I wouldn't call that depth.

Their regular 3rd baseman is Maikel Franco.  Currently hitting .220/281/.420 .   I think they'd rather have Flaherty.

Their big FA signing (C. Santana) has a .532 OPS so far.

The issue is not necessarily not resigning Flash, but having absolutely no other depth. Clearly we should have had a lefty bat with a good glove ready in case Beckham stunk.

The Orioles did not resign Markakis. But the replacements of Snyder,Smith, Rasmus and others were below replacement level. Because they were you had to trade Davies to get Parra. Parra was not good here and was gone.

Snider was actually worth 1 rWAR for the O's.  I said at the time that whomever they brought in to replace him probably wasn't going to be an improvement.

I had a good discussion with Luke in the ex-Orioles thread in the MLB forum.   Flaherty’s BABIP is crazy high, and his xwOBA (expected wOBA based on quality of contact) is well above his wOBA.    So, there’s a lot of evidence he’s been lucky, and he hasn’t hit for any power, so you can expect his numbers will normalize.    Perhaps he’ll have his best year, but I wouldn’t get too excited about his early performance.

Wait... are you saying he's not going to end the year hitting like Rogers Hornsby after six years of being Kiko Garcia?  You just blew my mind.

I'm thrilled for Flash. Anyone who thinks our record would be much different if we had Flaherty is wrong.

Here's the thing about Flash -- very good infielder. Beckham has not impressed me at all at 3B. And now with Schoop down, I do think Flaherty would be playing quite a bit for us. I miss Flaherty's defense. I think this bat will level out and revert to career norms.

    • This is an Orioles Hangout! It’s important, because it’s the dreaded MFY. The Evil Empire. It’s the #$@!*&@^*! Yankees. All wins are extra glorious, and the beer tastes colder against the pin-stripers and losses are always a wee bit more bitter. Rich against poor, good against evil, and every battle is a chance to make the world a better place.
    • Back to Gunnar Henderson the incredible superstar 22 year-old baseball player, saw this interesting article about short stop rankings. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40369915/mlb-shortstop-draft-bobby-witt-jr-gunnar-henderson-corey-seager-no-1-pick
    • I disagree about the Flaherty and Fujinama "acquisitions" (and I use that term VERY LOOSELY) last season. They both represented "unforced errors" and untimely hedging. Many (including myself) questioned the quality of the front part of our rotation beyond Bradish. It was hard to see that we had excellent depth in the starting rotation. But not the kind of quality up top to succeed through multiple rounds of the playoffs. Flaherty was literally one of the worse starting pitchers that was available. I understand that Elias was working on Cease. But you have to have a credible plan B. You can jump from plan A to plan F (break glass in case of emergency). Flaherty was so bad with us (IMO predictably) that he wasn't an option to start a postseason game and Fujinama wasn't even worth considering to appear on the roster.  IMO those were hedging trades that were made trying to be as cheap as possible when the roster was already as lost costing as could be. I understand that spending is inevitably an ownership choice. So, hopefully without the stench of Scrooge McAngelos around this time, Elias won't have such limiting hinderances to deal with.
    • Another step closer as the league now giving 100% run to the option people like better starting next week. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40377474/abs-challenge-system-set-used-triple-starting-june-25 Today and next two days sound like end of the line for full ABS withholding some valuable extra strikes on Chayce McDermott's nasty breaking pitches.
    • Jeff Kemp and Brian Holloway were two years behind me in high school.  Also Olympic Gold Medalist Mike Barrowman and Darren Star (Beverly Hills 90210 creator) and a few others.  And me.
    • First Brooks Robinson and now Gunnar...those O's will never learn. Drafting sketchy players from sketchy high schools.
