Chances at a swap on bad contracts for Davis?

Who is out there that may be entertained by a bad contract for a bad contract trade? Is it worth looking into at this point?  We'd probably have to sacrifice two years of Davis for 3 years of someone not quite as terrible, but probably a big waste of money.  Might be able to get lucky and trade someone if they bounce back.  Anything seem realistic below?

Miguel Cabrera, Jason Heyward, or Joey Votto till 2023?

Robinson Cano till 2023 minus his 2021 salary due to suspension?

Myers or Hosmer from SD?

Longoria? We could use a 3B.

Would Boston be trying to get out of the Sale contract?

Justin Upton?

Odor and Andrus in exchange for Davis?  Give us an expensive middle infield for two years, but at least they are stable options.

Put it this way:  You couldn't pay another team to take Davis, even if the Orioles covered 100% of the contract.  There's no room for him on a roster.  Who'd want him?

I look at it more like what save a team more in the long run.  Example.  Would the Tigers make that trade just to forgo the 2023 salary of Cabera.  Do they release Davis immediately upon trading for him?

I don't see any team actually keeping Davis if they make the trade.  I see it more as a chance to save money in the long run and in exchange the O's get a better bad contract to try to salvage over the next 3 or 4 years.

Again, may be a terrible idea.  I just wonder if Elias tries to stir up trades like this

Any players in a trade of this sort are probably, like Davis, going to have no trade protection.  I wouldn't even want to start and try and deal with that mess.

Cabrera is bad, but he's not on Davis' level.  And we'd probably have to a large amount of Cabrera's contract to make that happen.  I'm not sure if we really come out that much ahead.

I'm not sure how it works, but I'm thinking that the deferred payments are also part of it...that any team who'd take Davis on would also take on those deferred payments.  And if that's the case, any small insignificant chance of Davis being traded is eliminated.

If they play all 162 this year, Davis needs to be cut, there's no way around it.

What is the benefit to each team?  If the Tigers are saving money by trading Cabrera for Davis, wouldn't that cost the O's money in taking on his contract?  So what's in it for the Orioles?  The Orioles would have to add in players or prospects with Davis to get teams to take on his contract for nothing in return.

Here's the kind of deal I could see working: Davis and Mountcastle for a PTBNL.  The other team would basically be paying the remainder of Davis' contract for the next five years of Ryan Mountcastle.  I guess that would make sense if the Orioles really are in exceptionally dire financial straits.  Otherwise why not just take Mountcastle's production at reduced rates, and keep paying Davis?

The other day I jokingly brought up Elvis Andrus. The money doesn’t match up.

The only possible incentive would be a Competitive Balance draft pick thrown in. The team acquiring Davis would simply release him. The Orioles would have to value the player coming back in the deal more than a pick which I obviously doubt they would.

The other thing, why would we take on a longer contract?

Davis doesn’t stop the Os from spending money...ownership does.

So, the sooner we are doing paying out this (or any other big contract), the better.

Davis should be cut as soon as we know when the 2021 season is starting.

Yeah, if they can save they will, otherwise I hope this is the year.

I think there are definitely trades out there that we could do to offload Davis.  As you said, if a team can save money on an otherwise immovable contract, I think they do it on a heartbeat.

The question is, why would the Os do it?

    • What is unsettling to me is in how much better a position the team appeared to be in last year at this (approximate) time.
    • I love the Orioles but after the last three decades it is no longer unconditional love anymore from me.  The Orioles are going to have to put out once in a while to keep my interest.  They got to let us go all the way once in a while.
    • The Baltimore Orioles are still one of the best teams in all of baseball.  They still have an awful lot going for them.  Unfortunately, the while the distance between World Series winner and close but no cigar is not that much in the overall win column during the season, the things they need to go right, and the things they need to do to improve are still pretty massive. Compounding this is the fact that they can do everything necessary and it is still possible it won't work.  I don't say that as an excuse.  Elias is going to be measured by playoff appearances and the success that brings.  He has been engineer of two playoff teams and a near miss.  He still has as many wins with his near miss and his rebuilding teams in the playoffs as his two playoff teams.  It is certainly fine to criticize that. Of course he says it is on him.  One because it is, and two because any good GM would do the same.  But the Orioles are no longer building towards being good.  They are good and no one is going to give them anything.  There is work to be done to make this team better positioned to compete in the post season.   And the Angelos family is no longer a hinderance. I am as disappointed as everyone else and in general I am a root for the uniform not the player guy.  These guys have been fun to root for, but the second half and this playoff run was tough to stomach.  I hope that to give this team the chance to compete, they add a #1 TOR pitcher and another playoff caliber starter before the season starts.  I also hope they add a playoff experienced RH bat.  Trade, sign, whatever.  The window is open.  Whatcha gonna do?
    • Fire himself so he can go work for a larger market team maybe...
    • I doubt any GM has ever done that.  Maybe he can be the first, he could hold a big press conference and everything.  Go Elias, go!
    • Elias is also a known liar.  So take what he says with a grain of salt.
