Delayed start, 154 game season, expanded playoffs?

Obviously that changes things.

Still not a terrible first offer but yea, players shouldn't agree to it.

In what way is it not terrible? It gives players less than they are currently entitled to in exchange for something ownership desperately wants.

If this is pro rated versus full pay it does make a big difference.  The owners lose the publicity game big time if they try to ram that through.

There is no ramming through. There is a Collective Bargaining Agreement that both parties have an obligation to perform under in 2021. There will be a 162 game season that will start on April 1 unless MLBPA comes to an agreement with MLB.

This proposal, even with 162 game pay for 154 games is a joke. It grants the Commissioner blanket authority to suspend the season and cancel games without consent of the union and it set the playoff pool at the same fixed amount of 2019 even with the extra round of the playoffs. Both are obviously non-starters. It cuts off days from 24 to 18.

MLB has no leverage, MLBPA has no duty to ensure that MLB makes the most amount of money as possible this year. The CBA is still in effect. The season will be played and games will be played without fans if necessary. If MLB wanted to delay a season if there couldn't be fans, they could have negotiated for it in the last CBA negotiations.

This is correct.  MLB TradeRumors also reports it includes universal DH.  The union considers expanded playoffs an item that gives them leverage in the CBA negotiations and they don't want to give it up.  They are getting 162 games of pay for 154 games.  A slightly delayed regular season gives ownership a better chance to have fans in the stands for both the regular and post season games.  Best thing is that the union is actually considering it.  They usually just reject things out of hand.

The fans suffer. We get shorter games and probably that ridiculous extra-inning runner rule. And everybody makes the playoffs.

”YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! EVERYBODY MAKES THE PLAYOFFS! EVERYBODY IS GETTING WET!”

Seems like MLB needs to offer something to the players, beyond what they already owe them (full salary) in exchange for something that MLB wants and would seem to hurt the players (expanded playoffs).

I honestly don't understand his take here? How does that offer hurt the players? They get full pay for 154 games, and expanded opportunities to make more from playoff money?

I'm not a fan of delaying the season and rather them play fanless or spread out with 25% capacity for a month and start on time, but I know they are trying to limit games without fans.

I'm not sure how expanded playoffs hurt the players.

I guess for a lot the union leader types the playoff share would be less than regular season pay but it's still extra money.

I would think that, in general, players would prefer to make the playoffs over not making the playoffs.

If you create a precedent for 16 teams making the playoffs, it will depress salaries in the long run. Some extra players may get playoff bonuses, yes, but ultimately expanded playoffs is a lifeline for owners like Cleveland's, who can slash costs, ship out Lindor for making too much money, and still turn around and say to the fanbase, "What are you complaining about? We went 79-83! We're putting a playoff-caliber team on the field!"

Hardly seems like a joke. Maybe not perfectly "fair" but a reasonable starting offer. The players didn't take anywhere close to the haircut the owners took in 2020 (and possibly '21 as well). Times are tough and both ownership and the MLBPA should share the weight. If there wasn't a century of bad blood and bad faith between the parties, there might be an easier solution though.
