Wells got the first two outs in the 6th. He gave up a double. Nothing wrong with letting him try to get out of the 6th. You don’t expect Perez to implode because he’s been so good.

They're counting Wells's innings as it is. I'm surprised he pitched the 6th at all.

My issue is the he faced a guy with a man on that hammered balls in his 2 previous ABs. Nobody’s perfect but the concern has merit.

I guess it’s good that this thread had been dormant between June 24 and yesterday.

I think Hyde has had a really good year managing this club.  It’s not easy managing a team when your starters routinely have short outings.   Keeping a bullpen fresh while pushing the right buttons is extremely difficult and overall Hyde has done a great job of it.   He’s fostered a good culture in the clubhouse.  I’m really glad he finally has a decent club to manage — more decent than we expected, so far, partly thanks to Hyde. 

The decisions to (1) leave Wells in to face Chang, and (2) use Perez as the reliever against a guy who has been mashing lefties this year, were questionable.   I wouldn’t say either was indefensible.   Bottom line, both pitchers made some pretty poor pitches in those situations.  So for me, Hyde only gets a minor demerit for this one.   It’s really on the players for not coming through in high leverage situations as often as Tampa did.

Doesn't really matter that Hyde left Wells in to face Chang.  If he had pulled him Chang would probably have hit Perez as poor as Perez was pitching.   Perez has been solid.  He just had a bad night.

I wonder if it was just irrational exuberance with Wells' hot run.

I thought he was a Rule 5 Tommy John healer being curated to 120 innings...now he's Sandy Alcantara?    Maybe Jordan Lyles is too good at spreading veteran wisdom around getting an extra inning or batter.

The bit that bugs me is at the start of the inning both Bautista and Perez were throwing.    What was the 6th inning strategy?     As much as he's a punchline now, 3 games in 8 days seemed like a fine time for a LaRussan 1-inning strategy.

I feel the game turned on the pitch Shawn Armstrong made to Adley Rutschman.    It would be very baseball if in retrospect the high water moment* for Adley's 1st team became that very pitch.    Luke couldn't have gotten him ready for that

*the high water moment is already a good bit higher than almost anyone figured, hence joking around with house money here.   Bounce back, and win two, guys - it can keep getting better.

The splits also say that we should’ve kept Mejia hitting LH. He’s got a .500 OPS as a LH and a .800 OPS as a RH.

For the most part I think Hyde has been fine, but bunting with Odor in the 9th today was mindboggling. Much of Odor's value on the team is because he can end a game with one swing.

Agreed.  Nearly as a good a chance he gets a hit or walk than getting a good sacrifice bunt down.

I'd add that safety squeeze too if Hyde was the one that called it.  Mateo has been hitting well and is extremely difficult to double up.

Hyde was sure Odor with his veternosity would get the bunt down.   Odor gives us an edge and turns a great DP.....or dont you know?    He isnt a sub .200 hitter way past his prime.  Oh no not that.
