That's one thing TB has done a couple times. Signed a couple young guys to long term deals. Like first ARB year young. TB gets a sweetheart deal for a possible stud, player gets more $$$ than he ever dreamed of. If he doesn't pan out it's not the blood bath of a Chris Davis deal. Works out for both sides.

Then they flip him anyway.

And you want to get to them before arb 1.

I came here to comment on today’s starter, but saw your comment and had to agree with it. This is also why we don’t sign players to extensions. You trade a guy at peak value, restock the pipeline, and call up the next guy..

TB signs players to extensions.  Just because they signed a player to an extension, doesn't mean they won't trade the player.  They increased the trade value of the player and enabled their ability to keep them an extra year or two.  This is something the O's should be looking at for their best young players.

May as well trade Rutschman, Hall and Rodriguez too then.

Man some people are so overly obsessed with just hoarding prospects

Elias just was interviewed mid-inning.

He specifically said Means was pushed back in order to control his innings.  Specifically cited going from 60 to 162 games this year.

So, no injury, in case there were any concerns.

Hopefully he was being forthright.

Your inference from my comment is a non-sequitur. I advocate trading a player at peak value. Prospects are not at peak value.

In general I disagree with extensions, and I am well aware that the guy who signs an extension can be traded.

Any long-term contract discussion with an established player is by definition paying for his past and not for his future. That is risky enough to be unwise. There are of course exceptions to every rule, but once we have our pipeline going, we should plan for the departure of our stars, and for the arrival of our next batch of stars.

Sometimes they are.

Wieters trade value was probably highest as a prospect, same with Bundy.

Pretty darn rare you see one of those guys traded.  Maybe when the Yankees traded Jesus Montero?

Gotta hope that this is the truth.  I prefer to believe Elias as I like him and I think he's more up front and honest with information than a guy like DD was.  Obviously there's stuff he can't say, we all know that.

I'm about 83.7% positive that he's telling the truth here.  Haven't heard any rumors of shoulder/elbow discomfort, strains, etc.

Very few pitchers were throwing 93-94 mph in those days.  The harder you throw, the more stress there is on your body.    It’s pretty simple physics.

Nolan Ryan.

I guess we'll never see anyone come even remotely close to him ever again.

Never is a long time.   Heck, the way baseball is going we might see someone challenge his strikeout records in 2/3 the innings pitched!

Even with the high K/9 some starters like Scherzer are putting up, they don't pitch enough innings, particulalry early in the career.  E.g, Scherzer's max IP in a single year is 228, Kershaw is 232.   Ryan eclipsed that # 8 times, pitching an insane by modern standards 332 IP in 1974.   Even at his age 42 season he pitched 239 innings.
