Coach K is retiring

Following the upcoming season, Coach K is retiring.  Jon Scheyer is going to be the next head coach.

Being Duke used to be in the same conference. I never rooted for them, but always thought Coach K ran a respectable program and respected his skillset as a tier 1 coach in college ball.

Not saying he was perfect, but compared to some of his peers, I thought he stood out well.

I guess Nate James left for Austin Peay one season too early.

He wouldn’t have gotten the job over Scheyer although he may have been the #1 asst and you can argue that’s a better job than Austin Peay.

On the Eve of K’s retirement, who would be his top ten players to form a team?  It gets a little weird because he has had a bunch of one and dones this past decade or so.  You have guys like Williamson who was a rocket his lone year there, but can’t get much out of his pro career because of injuries/weight.  You have guys like Laettner and Battier who were dominating college players and carved out good, but not great NBA careers.  You have Jayson Tatum who may end up being the best NBA player from Duke, but missed some games on a relatively underwhelming team (5th in the regular season, 2nd round exit.)  Not to mention Kyrie Irving who missed most of his only college season on his flat earth.

 

If I had to win a college game, and took guys based off of what they did in college, I’d take:

PG Hurley

SG J Williams

SF G Hill

PF Brand

C Laettner (I know he played more of a four for a lot of his career)

Bench:

Dawkins

Reddick

Battier

Williamson

Boozer

 

That’s a lot of great players left off.  ( I know I’m missing guys like Ferry from his early years.  The Laettner years are what I really remember.

Coach K is having one hell of a retirement party.   1200th win, 100th tournament win, breaking Coach Wooden’s record with 13 final fours.    And, it seems like he’s relaxed and having fun with it, really getting a kick out of the growth of his players during the tournament.   No matter what happens next weekend, it’s been pretty awesome watching a legendary coach ride out on a high note.

SG didn’t go there, as I recall.  He’s just a Duke fan.

Credit to Carolina, they played a great game.   As to Duke, I thought they played decently but they didn’t shoot well.   Overall, it was a classic game.   Tough to see Coach K go out that way, but at least it wasn’t a poor effort or a lopsided game.   

I think Kansas will beat UNC and would have beaten Duke.  But we’ll see.

It's too bad Williams didn't make those two free throws in the final minute.  I'm not sure if that would have won them the game or not, but making free throws down the stretch like that is huge.  I feel bad for that kid.  

Kansas looks strong right now, I agree they would have beaten either team.  And yes, tough to see Coach K go out that way, too.  Great game overall.

FT line was inconsistent for Duke all year.  They had done well in the tourney but they missed 7 yesterday. (As did UNC)

Cant have that in a close game.  Williams has to make at least one of those. It changes the game.

But that’s youth for you…at times, it’s comes up small in late game situations.
