Kelvin Gutierrez’s defense

His speed is not elite, but he’s pretty quick.   Statcast has him at 28.1 ft/sec, 77th percentile sprint speed.

I don’t think he will hit enough to justify carrying his glove, as his -0.8 rWAR suggests.   But I do appreciate his defense for its own sake, while we have him.

I love his D also and was wondering, does his D and -0.8 rWAR still outperform Mychael Franco this season?

Franco: -1.6 rWAR in 104 games

Gutierrez: -0.8 rWAR in 73 games.   However, 0.0 rWAR in 35 games with the Orioles.

So, advantage Gutierrez.

SSS but still muy bueno!  He's fun to watch.  He enjoys it, is a "physical specimen" and a cool "sleeper find".

Plus defense. Past scouting reports note that he had some of the best Trackman Data in the Royals system. I’ve seen him have has high as a 60/80 for Raw Power.

This looks like the type of guy we should be taking a chance on. Especially since he can hold down 3B defensively, and we don’t have any decent internal options for 2022. Hopefully, he can put his swing together for us.

I don't see him holding on to a 40 man roster spot over the winter.   Elias has mentioned that he wants to hold on to Urias and Mateo.  He also said he believes the team needs some infield help from outside the organization.

I agree that Urias and Mateo will be more of a priority to keep on the 40 man roster. If Gutierrez could hit any then he gets protected, but he also wouldn't have been available in the first place.

Urias has 1.9 bWAR. In a season of small victories, I think he is definitely one. Mateo also has positive WAR, but only .4.
In the absence of any better options at third I would much rather have Gutierrez then someone like Ruiz or Franco or any of the other lumberjacks we’ve trundled out there. I think there’s a reason to keep him, however it’s unlikely anyone would claim him if he were DFAed, so that’s ok.

HR for Gutierrez tonight, putting his OPS over .600. He's gotten on base his last 14 games.

I wonder what the deal is with the bad defensive numbers in KC this year.

Really making the most of his opportunity. Can he hit consistently is the question. Elias loved Ruiz so my guess is he is a nugget.

Despite my better instincts, I find myself foolishly dreaming on Gutierrez.   Not that I think he could ever be a good hitter - but what if he could be .700ish?   He was .741 in the minors.   At .700, his defense might be enough to carry him.  I like his speed, and the way he busts it down the line on every ground ball.  He just can’t hit - can he?

I find myself thinking the same because I enjoy watching him in the field. Could he learn to play short? I would feel better about hiding his bat there, the average OPS at SS is usually about 50 points lower than 3B.

Similar to Mateo, he is like the epitome of replacement level. Will be tough to keep on a good team but also tough to get rid of. I also like that he always seems to be smiling. I would say both his bat and fielding compare favorably to Ruiz as well as the version of Franco that we had. If we brought in a Josh Harrison or Eduardo Escobar would there be a spot for him? Or do you roll with Gutierrez and put all FA dollars into pitching?

Sorry, but it's a no from me.  Even while he's OPS'd a solid .768 in September/Oct, it's come with a BAPIP of .379 - unsustainable.  I'd be fine with having him in AAA next season - but not on the MLB roster unless he tears it up in AAA for at least a couple of months.

The O's basically dumped Ruiz to give Franco a try.   Ruiz and Gutierrez are similar players.   I don't see Elias sticking with Gutierrez when the O's are now thinking that its time to start winning.   Elias will be looking for a 3B that can both hit and play defense.   Whether that is Urias or someone else. JMO.
