The Teixeira Watch: Part V - AM says the O's "have flexibility" on Tex

But we have no idea how Matusz will perform. He didn't fair so well in the AFL. It's possible he could bust or suffer a career ending injury. Smoak is much more likely to stay healthy and reach his ceiling IMO.

What information do you have that shows that Smoak will not get hurt and not bust out?

And after one AFL season you can tell that Matusz is more than likely gonna bust and Smoak was a better selection.

At least let Matusz have one full pro season before you are ready to label him a bust.

Right but now we have to get Tex, unless we want to trade Markakis or Guthrie to get a Smoak...

No offense JTrea, but this is a pointless argument. If we would have drafted Smoak, we would have missed out on all of the big-name pitchers this offseason, and we would have been complaining right now about how we have no pitching.

And a lot of people may give Matusz too much credit around here sometimes, but I think you are doing the same with Smoak right now. You talk like he is a sure fire superstar. Nobody in the minors is that.

I'm not labeling him a bust.

Position players are known to stay healthier than pitchers. Smoak was a sure thing in the draft. Matusz was also a sure thing, but pitchers are extremely fragile.

So trade our only good pitcher and our franchise player for a 1B? Why not just play Salazaar? There are other options besides signing Tex, and had this been another high price 1b we wouldn't be in on them. We are after Tex not only for his talent on the field but the marketability he would have in the state of Maryland. Brian Matusz was the pick to make, hard hitting 1B are easier to find than 6'4 LHP with 4 plus pitches.
