Game Notes

  • Believe it or not, this is only the Orioles' 2nd trip to St Louis ever, since the franchise moved to Baltimore from St Louis in 1954.   The only other trip, according to Roch on his blog this morning, was in 2003.

My recollection is that the Orioles wore replica St. Louis Browns uniforms for the middle game of that 2003 series.

Sidney (I was born to be a Brown) Ponson pitched a tidy seven-hit complete game and the Orioles won, 8-1, their only win in that three-game series.

Anyone know if there are plans for the O's to wear Browns uniforms again during this series?

Wow Bradish is filthy

I'm stunned by having a guy coming up out of the minors and just instantly establishing that he belongs here.

If Bradish and Zimmerman can stay consistently decent, we're going to have 3/4 locked down for a while.  I don't want to get too excited prematurely, but...  man, the potential.

    • I’m not against getting Crochet, but I see him as more of a trade that’s looking into 2025 and beyond. Crochet is likely to get rested in the second half or even put on the shelf in September.  If it’s about getting pitchers to help with a deep postseason run then Elias will have to make additional moves.  Crochet is already near double the amount of innings he’s ever pitched over an entire season. I don’t see it likely he pitches 200 innings this season after his injury history.
    • What I have heard about the batter's eye is that it is made of some kind of mesh and at certain time of day, light shines through it.   This was from a Darrell Hernaiz interview a couple of years ago.   Also, the lights aren't that good, per Hernaiz.
    • This is probably a good pivot if nothing else but the "better" pitchers on the market don't pan out. Connor Norby would seem like a player the Cubs would want. If we are willing to take on the salary. Do the Cubs really think they are contending in 2025 or 26? Hell, maybe they can add in Drew Smyly. Especially if DC looks iffy to actually make it back this season.
    • ??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either. It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.  You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...
    • I don't see any issue with an innings limit. Let him pitch the next two months as an opener. Ramp him up again in September. Let him loose in October.
    • Crochet in June. 36 IP, 27 H, 6 BB, 56 K Doesn’t look like he’s getting tired to me.   Innings limit?   Unless Crochet is asking for a limit, I say there is no limit. Did someone put an innings limit on 23 Chris Sale (78 to 180), 39 yo Verlander (0 to 175) or a 23 yo Jim Palmer (0 to 181)?
