Wondering if there were already health concerns with him in the spring and that’s really the reason he was held back rather than the babying theory.

Well they certainly aren't babying 18 year old Deivy Cruz.  The little LHP threw 87 pitches yesterday.   Seems like they are much more aggressive with the Latin pitchers.

I doubt it's because they're "Latin."

I don't think he was trying to make that point, more of an observation. I do wonder if there were other health concerns for Baumler out of spring training since it really made no sense to have him able to throw at the beginning of spring training games and then couldn't make the Delmarva team.

Again, hopefully this is just them being overly cautious but shoulders are never a good thing.

Yea..is this just “normal” after not pitching for a while or is this a bigger sign of an issue?

Either way, pretty obvious he won’t be throwing many more innings this year.

They happen to be Latin.  Perhaps they have built more innings up over the last two years.  Whatever.   Portes and Delosantos are 19 years/20 years old and going 6 innings.  Cruz was only in the DSL last year and threw 87 pitches yesterday.   Draw whatever conclusions you want.   I was only making what I consider to be a factual statement.   The Orioles seems to be more aggressive with the pitch counts for the pitchers signed as free agents from Latin America.   I'm sure there are perfectly reasonable reasons for it besides some sort of racism which you seem to be implying that I was getting at.

No. I'm not saying anything is racist or that anyone is doing anything wrong, and I'm not trying to imply you did either.

I just think the latin part is wrong. I'm guessing, having not done the work myself, that there are white people throwing similar numbers of innings in this org, and that it's more about their relative health than anything else.

I think the real issue here is that almost all of the 20 years old and below pitchers in the system are Latin. Elias has almost totally ignored high school pitching.

I think it's RZNJ who pointed out that this is how Houston has done it too.

Basically load up on young, cheap, arms and some will develop. I like the strategy because it minimizes the financial risk associated with pitching, but it leaves some holes when you're starting from scratch for sure.

And the ones he does sign mostly get tiny bonuses. He's not even trying to sign good latin pitching.

Yeah, if he doesn’t go heavy on pitching in this year’s draft, we should be concerned.

    • What is unsettling to me is in how much better a position the team appeared to be in last year at this (approximate) time.
    • I love the Orioles but after the last three decades it is no longer unconditional love anymore from me.  The Orioles are going to have to put out once in a while to keep my interest.  They got to let us go all the way once in a while.
    • The Baltimore Orioles are still one of the best teams in all of baseball.  They still have an awful lot going for them.  Unfortunately, the while the distance between World Series winner and close but no cigar is not that much in the overall win column during the season, the things they need to go right, and the things they need to do to improve are still pretty massive. Compounding this is the fact that they can do everything necessary and it is still possible it won't work.  I don't say that as an excuse.  Elias is going to be measured by playoff appearances and the success that brings.  He has been engineer of two playoff teams and a near miss.  He still has as many wins with his near miss and his rebuilding teams in the playoffs as his two playoff teams.  It is certainly fine to criticize that. Of course he says it is on him.  One because it is, and two because any good GM would do the same.  But the Orioles are no longer building towards being good.  They are good and no one is going to give them anything.  There is work to be done to make this team better positioned to compete in the post season.   And the Angelos family is no longer a hinderance. I am as disappointed as everyone else and in general I am a root for the uniform not the player guy.  These guys have been fun to root for, but the second half and this playoff run was tough to stomach.  I hope that to give this team the chance to compete, they add a #1 TOR pitcher and another playoff caliber starter before the season starts.  I also hope they add a playoff experienced RH bat.  Trade, sign, whatever.  The window is open.  Whatcha gonna do?
    • Fire himself so he can go work for a larger market team maybe...
    • I doubt any GM has ever done that.  Maybe he can be the first, he could hold a big press conference and everything.  Go Elias, go!
    • Elias is also a known liar.  So take what he says with a grain of salt.
