With all the money the Yankees have spent, In my mind the Sox and Rays are still the teams to beat.

I agree with you. The Yankees made huge signings, sure, but they were in positions of desperate need. If you look at the Rays, for instance - they needed a corner outfielder. So they got Matt Joyce. It's not a $100 million signing, and it didn't dominate the newspapers for weeks, but they filled their holes just as well as the Yankees did.

McAdam has more on the Brad Penny deal, too. The agreement, a one-year deal with a base salary of $5MM, will be finalized Monday. Incentives and performance bonuses can increase the total deal another $3MM if Penny pitches more than 160 innings, McAdam reports.

I can see why Andy MacPhail passed. Good upside for the Red Sox.
