Will the hitting coaches change in 2023?

We have no idea how receptive each individual hitter to advice from coaches.  About the only anecdotal evidence we have is regarding the “intervention” they had with Mateo.  50 games of an .880 OPS for Mateo is cause for a promotion and a raise.

They certainly changed an approach this year, which I think affected both Mountcastle and Hays, and then those two slipped into new ways later in the year too.  They wanted them to be more selective and take more walks.

Not sure if overall this is the approach for the team, but it's one approach.

At this time last year, the same question was being asked about the pitching coach, by many people including myself. We had seen guys like Akin and Zimmermann and Kremer come up and flounder badly in the major leagues. I personally labelled it as my biggest concern in the rebuild, that we couldn't get the most out of young pitchers.

A year later that picture looks a lot different.

It’s funny.  Wildcard has acted like Holt is some genius since he got here and this is the first year he had success.

But the hitting coaches don’t get any kind of a pass, especially in a year where the wall is introduced, offense is down across the league and the talent on the team is subpar?

I don’t get why this is even a discussion.

Point one:  Holt has only been the major league pitching coach the last two years.  The first two years that he was with in the O's organization he coached the minors where Holt had a lot of success.

Point two:  I asked a question about the hitting coaches because the team's hitting is in the bottom half of the league while the team in 2023 wants to win the division or at least be a playoff team.   I did not express an opinion.  I asked a question.

1) Holt didn’t see A LOT of success with the team before this year.  We didn’t see guys take steps forward. Any coach is going to see improvements from some players, that’s not really a big deal.

And if that’s your criteria, we have seen plenty of young hitters do well under Fuller in the minors.

2) There is no need to even ask the question and the tone of your post and you mentioning the struggles clearly is you saying a change should be considered.

If we’re talking tone then you need to keep your hand off the thermostat.  If you don’t think it needs to be discussed, feel free to not discuss it.

Statistically the team was better offensively this year. If we look at a few selected stats from Fangraphs:

2022: Runs = 674 (#10 in AL), HR= 121 (8th), ISO = 0.154 (7th), OBP = .305 (11th), +wRC=99 (9th)

2021: Runs=659 (14th), HR = 195 (10th), ISO= .163 (10th), OBP= .304 (12th), +wRC=83 (13th)

2019: Runs= 729 (11th), HR= 213 (12th), ISO= .168 (12th), OBP = .310 (12th), +wRC= 88 (12th)

So consistent improvement across all of these stats. While I'm not certain you can credit the coaching staff with the success at least they didn't make such a significant negative impact that the team statistics regressed relative to the other AL teams. I don't see a reason to get rid of the hitting coaches based on these stats.

Not sure how anyone can deem this a worthy discussion.

So, this is a message board set up to discuss all things related to the MLB Orioles club. Why would the hitting coaches, or any other inane baseball topic, be less than worthy of discussion.

I respect your knowledge and insight and frequently read your posts with great interest. However, you are being rather dismissive with this last post. Is that really your intent?

    • I want to say, I thought the single he pulled on a good FB in on his hands was as impressive as the long homer he hit on a center cut FB.  Getting to those pitches in on the hands is tough.   Like I said though, I’d like to see more progress on change-ups and breaking stuff.
    • I can appreciate where you are coming from. But the playoffs are more than luck. It’s about top talent performing against other teams top end talent. The Astros didn’t do all that winning because of luck (cheating aside lol). The Yankees teams of the mid to late 90’s were more than lucky.  We have the kind of talent (both on the field and in the front office) and we took the extreme tanking step in order to amass dynasty/multi-championship level run. Just simply making the playoffs and getting eliminated early, while you continue to be cheap and overly cautious (if that is what was to happen) will get old after awhile. There is a reason that the Rays and Guardians don’t have a significant fanbase/marketplace engagement for a reason (beyond being a small market). STL is a small market and the Padres were until recently, when their ownership changed and decided to spend to engage the marketplace and grow fan interest.
    • Did I hear Kevin Brown correctly today - did he say the average attendance across all games in the league yesterday (06/15) was north of 39K?  That is impressive,  if true.
    • Another nice start, hope everything is good with the Burnes family.
    • How many pitchers do you think will be available that are also worth having?  How many other teams will also be after them?  There will be serious competition for the handful of players the Orioles have any use for and there's no indication that there's anything like a buyer's market out there. While it's technically true that Elias doesn't have to do anything, should the team continue to play at the current level and he decides to do nothing so he can continue to hug prospects, then I wouldn't want to be him if the O's get booted from the postseason as ingloriously as they were last season.  None of this means Elias has to make a dumb deal, but let's not pretend he's automatically in the driver's seat.
    • I don’t think anyone hates Cowser. Or dislikes him.    Criticism and pointing out flaws in someone’s game aren’t negatives. For me, Cowser has been one of the pleasant surprises of this year, but he does have his warts. He strikes out a lot and he looks prone to being in nasty slumps.    That doesn’t mean I hate the guy or I’m negative about him, but some struggle with nuance.    You can see where he can become a very good hitter and his defense is excellent.
    • I'm guessing that would be Luis Robert Jr.
